A democratic socialist in Wisconsin tests how far left voters want to go in a battleground state

Over the last month, Democratic socialists have notched victories in the liberal strongholds of New York City, Washington, D.C., and Denver.

Now Francesca Hong, a single mother who has worked as a dishwasher and line cook, is trying to do the same with her campaign for governor in Wisconsin, a swing state known for razor-thin election margins where winning over moderate, independent voters is crucial.

Hong’s candidacy has turned the Democratic primary on Aug. 11 into the latest test of just how far left voters are willing to go in the November midterms.

“We do this in Wisconsin, we’re going to change politics across the country,” the 37-year-old Hong said as she headed into the final month of campaigning. “People who are frustrated and have a lot more to lose — and I’m one of those people — are ready to coalesce around someone they can believe in.”

John Ravdabaugh, an undecided independent voter, came away impressed after hearing Hong speak at the retirement home where he lives. Even though the democratic socialist label concerns him, Ravdabaugh said he would consider voting for Hong.

“Every system reaches a point where change is necessary,” he said.

The number of indoctrinated voters has increased to the point where openly communist candidates can win. What I observe in the people I live near, they don’t care about communist vs. socialist vs. capitalist. But they are upset, and costs are way up. Many will vote for socialists simply because they’re different.

Let’s hope she gets the nomination. If she wins in November it’s on the voters.
Her getting the nomination will help derail the future of Mandela Barnes. I’m surprised there are that many stupid people there for either of them to get anywhere. Milwaukee is an excrement hole and Madison a woke college town. The rest of the state is midwestern.

The plan is working perfectly...

Socialists/communists like to argue that the rich need to pay their 'fair share' and that the divide between the richest and the poorest Americans is too great.

The best reply is simple arithmetic.

Take all the net worth of all the billionaires (and above) in the USA ($6.8 trillion) and divide by all the peeps in the USA (approx 350 million), and you get about $19,500 per man, woman and kiddo. That's it, less than 20 grand!

And, with the billionaires being wiped out, there would be no further payments.

And, the whole calculation is based on an absurd assumption, as the billionaires' holdings are largely not in cash. They could never collectively write a check for 6.8 tril so the meager payout could never be even close to 19 thou.

And, ensuing job losses (the billionaires own businesses) and loss of product availability (for just about everything) would be chaotic and destructive to basic subsistence living.

William Buckley said he’d rather be governed by someone randomly chosen from the Boston phone book than by anyone from the faculty at Harvard.

“A DISHWASHER & A LINE COOK”

“Hong entered politics in 2020 by launching a campaign in a crowded primary for a Wisconsin State Assembly seat representing parts of Madison. She successfully ran during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic in part by leaning into her background as a small restaurant owner just as the culinary industry was hit hardest by the pandemic.”

J. Mandela Barnes (born Jesse Mandela Barnes, December 1, 1986) is an American politician who served as the 45th lieutenant governor of Wisconsin from 2019 to 2023. A member of the Democratic Party, he was the state representative for Wisconsin’s 11th Assembly district from 2013 to 2017. Barnes was the first African American to serve as Wisconsin’s lieutenant governor.

Barnes was the Democratic nominee in the 2022 United States Senate election in Wisconsin, losing to incumbent Republican Senator Ron Johnson. On December 2, 2025, Barnes announced his candidacy for governor of Wisconsin in the 2026 election.

J. Mandela Barnes was born in Milwaukee on December 1, 1986, the son of a public school teacher and a United Auto Workers member. Jesse is his father’s name, while his middle name, Mandela, is a tribute to the anti-apartheid activist and first South African black president Nelson Mandela. Barnes says he used his middle name since birth.

Barnes sponsored a 2016 bill to eliminate cash bail. It would have barred judges from considering the “nature, number and gravity” of the charges and required the release of a defendant unless there was “clear and convincing evidence” of flight risk or of danger to an individual or witness.

In January 2026, he told PBS Wisconsin that his first priority as governor with a Democratic legislature would be to expand BadgerCare. Ahead of the first major Democratic candidate forum, Barnes proposed to fund startup grants and emergency funds for grocery stores in food deserts.

So basically, this dude is saying, I’m voting for this person and won’t live long enough to know the disaster that will become of it.

lol. We just handed a senate seat with qualifications that she was a sister of the senator. We don’t have much credibility to complain about a cook.

“John Ravdabaugh, an undecided independent voter ... “

The socialists are the worst, but as far as I’m concerned, someone who says they are independent is just an embarrassed Democrat. Independents are worse than old school Dems and just a step below the communists.
