The trouble with Israel’s Argentina taunts
The Spectator ^ | July 17, 2026 | Gus Carter

Israel armed Argentina during the Falklands. That is a fact. Between the 2 April and 14 June 1982, Israel sold Argentina air-to-air missiles, anti-personnel mines, anti-tank weapons, replacement parts for jets, radar and communications equipment and fuel. Nesher fighter jets, supplied by Israel, were part of the air attack that destroyed the RFA Sir Galahad in Bluff Cove. Fifty-six British sailors and soldiers died in that raid.

So when Israel’s foreign minister Gideon Sa’ar taunted England for our 2-1 World Cup defeat, that was a continuation of traditional Israeli foreign policy. ‘How does the song go?’ Sa’ar posted. ‘It’s coming home. Yes it is. It’s coming home to Argentina. Vamos Argentina!’ On the pitch, Argentine footballers unfurled a flag that read ‘Las Malvinas son Argentinas’.

Defenders of Israel claim we somehow deserve their ire. Stephen Daisley argues on Coffee House that Britain has antagonised Israel in recent years by not being sufficiently supportive following 7 October. ‘After constant provocation, it was inevitable that Israel would lose its patience with Britain,’ he writes. We have apparently ‘got off pretty lightly’ in their support for Argentina in the World Cup.

I don’t care all that much about football, so Israel’s support for Messi & Co doesn’t really matter to me. But I do care about those who fight for our country. And that phrase ‘got off pretty lightly’ rankles. Israeli support for Argentina is not simply a story of jovial football rivalry.

During the Falklands invasion, Israel supplied larger fuel tanks so bombers and fighters could more easily reach British territory. This wasn’t just completion of contracts signed before the invasion – and in any case, these contracts could have been suspended, which both France and West Germany did the moment the invasion began.

Turns out they armed the right side. I support Argentina’s rights to the Malvinas.

I like Millei just fine, but if the Malvinas/Falklands were uninhabited at the time of settlement by the Brits, what is the claim? Just being off the coast of Argentina doesn’t seem to be enough.

Why would Israel be anti-British? Without British cooperation (including, for instance, the Balfour Declaration), modern-day Israel would not have come to be.

Israel sold weapons to Argentina during the Falklands War because Argentina was an important customer, Israel wanted to make money from arms sales, maintain its own independent foreign policy instead of automatically siding with NATO countries like the U.S. and UK, and increase its influence in Latin America, not because it supported Argentina’s invasion of the Falklands.

Bad move. They could have easily stayed on the sidelines, forego the money, and not make distrust and even enemies where they had none before.

Its all about the economic zones that extend for hundreds of miles from every tiny island. The change to this was a bad idea.

I think the old rule was 12 miles. If something is more than 12 miles from your coast its fair game to anyone.

I think the change in the U.S. was because of foreign fishers going 13 miles off the coast and over-fishing. tHta happened during Ford, if I recall.

Israel siding with a philosemitic country over an antisemitic country. Who would have figured?

What I know of modern day England is that they countenance mass rape of underage white girls by Pakistani groomers, they suppress free speech at levels that would do East Germany proud, and many of their major cities have. become places where no sane person would openly wear a nice watch. I don’t particularly care if England’s feelings are hurt.

Britain diverting naval assets during the first years of World War II to preventing Jews fleeing the Nazis from reaching Palestine. Until operation Barbarossa, the Nazis facilitated travel for Jews leaving 'Greater Germany' who were trying to reach the Middle East despite the British blockade in the eastern Med. And after the war, interdiction actions resumed targeting refugees.

Jewish terrorists responded by targeting the British.

Layered on that history is a growing hostility in Islamisized Britain toward Jews in that country.

Britain, the City of London, the Bank of England, Lloyd’s of London and the rest of the British economic Empire AKA the Deep State or the Swamp, are taking it in the shorts thanks to
Trump, Vance, Bessent et al in the revival of the American Syatem. The same Brits who created Israel created its enemies as well, setting up a very profitable state of perpetual hostilities.

No Sympathy here. go Argentina and Milei.

IIRC Argentina’s claim was based on Argentina taking over Spain’s Atlantic possessions when it achieved independence. There were efforts to settle the islands. A US frigate destroyed the settlement in reprisal for a naval dispute. Shortly afterwards, the British drove out the remaining Argentines and took over the islands.

There were British, French and Spanish voyages and claims before all this. The British claim may be based on those earlier explorations. Britain’s habit of “hoovering” up everything that wasn’t firmly nailed down has caused a lot of resentment over the centuries.

The internet keeps expecting everyone to get indignant and leap to support one side in every argument.

No love for anybody in this squabble.

The Balfour Declaration was a one-time thing - England was extremely pro-Arab in the early to mid 20th Century (and beyond, if you ask me), and did much to smother Israeli independence in its crib - including denying tens to hundreds of thousands of Holocaust survivors the ability to get to what is now Israel. Britain was a brutal occupying power, and Israel helping Argentina was a small payback for all that Britain did.
