Latino Voters and the SAVE Act
RealClear Politics ^ | July 14, 2026 | Joseph Castleberry

Latino voters overwhelmingly support requiring government-issued photo ID to vote. Polls conducted by Pew Research Center (2025) and CNN (2006) have independently confirmed that 82% of Latino voters in the United States approve such a requirement. According to CNN, about 85% of white voters agree, as well as 76% of black voters. The SAVE Act would codify in law the popular supermajority opinion on voter identification, but while the House has passed it multiple times, it has stalled in the Senate.

It should be no surprise that Latino voters support the key feature of the SAVE Act. First, immigrant voters highly value their citizenship and the right to vote that it conveys to them. It takes at least seven years of legal presence in the USA to become a citizen, and those who have gone through that process value what they learned and who they became in the process. They are proud and patriotic and zealous to preserve the system they have adopted and mastered. They do not take their rights as citizens lightly, and they do not want non-citizens to vote.

Second, immigrant voters highly value the rule of law, which they recognize as the main thing that makes the United States what it is – the best place in the world to work and build a prosperous and free life. While writing my book, “The New Pilgrims: How Immigrants are Renewing America’s Faith and Values,” I interviewed many immigrants who specifically explained that they moved to America for the purpose of coming under the rule of law. They understand that no justice, no equal protection under law, is possible without it. They can also articulate how lawlessness and cheating (la viveza criolla) undermine prosperity in their home countries. They understand that the land of the free and home of...

I never understood the idea that Latinos object to efforts to combat voter fraud. If a Latino is a US citizen, why would they want a non-citizen Latino to commit fraud by voting? I don’t want a white to commit fraud by voting illegally. Its an insult to Latinos.

“Latino voters overwhelmingly support requiring government-issued photo ID to vote”

And probably most Democrats in the US want it. I suspect it is only the Demoncrats in Congre$$ that don’t want it.

Or probably most Dim voters want it and think it's right, they're just afraid to say so publicly in front of other Dim voters. Being afraid of being called racist is almost like a kind of spiritual bondage.

There is a reason that there is some Republican opposition to the SAVE act in the Senate. The only possible reason is really, really bad. Those opposing are really democRATs and defrauding their voters with their deception. I wish there was a vote so we could all know who they are. One thing is sure, John Thune is one of them. Mitch McConnell too.

The only people objecting to voter IS, are democrat leaders, who want to convey the idea/message that, it hurts mostly blacks and Hispanics and other minorities. Yet, the majority of the minorities that democrats claim would be disenfranchised, want the voter ID act.

It’s not an issue that the voters worry about; it’s the democratic party leadership that want to make it an issue. It’s an issue that should never have become an issue.

Huge majority support but that rino cuck Thune will not do what is needed to get it through. We knew what this was but hoped we were wrong. We were not.

"Latino" and "Hispanic" identity is largely a fiction created by Democrats to pander and win votes. A Cuban American probably doesn't feel a great sense of solidarity toward a Mexican American just because both came from countries that were Spanish speaking (never mind the fact that "Hispanics" include everything from people with 100% European Spanish ancestry to Afro-Caribbean blacks).

The other fiction that the Democrats created is that anyone with a Spanish surname supports unrestricted illegal immigration and thus the right of illegal immigrants to vote, collect benefits, etc. This may be true of La Raza activists around college campuses and those whose immediate family members are themselves illegals, but I doubt it applies much to anyone else.

I assume married women who are already registered under their married name and will be able to vote with just their DL - does anyone know differently?

It won’t turn California red. Another Contract with America would do it as long as it’s confined to 80-20 issues. Not too much LGPTQ stuff. 100% school choice. Trump accounts-everyone gets the $1k starter money after 2028. Put it out there.

It’s not good to have to go back to the well to get our point across but with the democrat socialists ascending and all the drama that accompanies them this is a golden opportunity to finish Trump’s term with a bang and set us up for ‘28. We got the talkers while they sell crazy.

One good reason for a new Contract. Our enemies wouldn’t have one. It would dig their own grave. It will be interesting to see what comes out of our mid-term convention in Dallas.

It is vote harvesters who get the Democrats elected who don’t want it.

True enough.

There are constant memes from the left, how so many black people don’t have an ID, don’t know how to get an ID, how so many are so poor that they can’t afford the nominal fee to get a driver’s license or other ID, and so because of that, this is why the Democrat party line is to oppose voter ID.

So it’s considered racist to oppose voter ID, because allegedly big masses of black folks don’t have an ID>

I’m hoping Lindsey’s sister can change his mind.

Thune would be dead politically if she asked him to pass it and he said no.

He’s probably politically dead now anyway.

The criticism I heard, is that the left has said married women or others with a name change, would have to produce marriage licenses or other documentation of a different name from the name on the birth certificate.

This would also apply to these “trans gender” types, who adopt a different name.

Having to show documentation is said to be a hardship by the left.

I don’t know if this is in the SAVE act legislation. But this is one talking point of the left, that 100 million women will need to drag out their marriage licenses as an ID>
