A criminal who hijacked a plane from Cuba to Florida in 2003 and served 20 years in prison had been in ICE custody awaiting deportation — till a Dem-appointed judge dumped him back on the street last week.
Cuban national Miakel Guerra Morales — who assaulted crew members during his terrifying midair hijacking — was detained by ICE in December, then ordered freed July 8 by Florida Judge John E. Steele, who said he’d been in custody too long.
The Department of Homeland Security on Monday railed against the Bill Clinton-nominated federal judge’s decision to release Guerra Morales.
“This activist judge forced ICE to release a criminal illegal alien who was convicted and sentenced to 22 years for hijacking a plane back into American communities,” DHS Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis raged in a statement.
“This is yet another example of an activist judge trying to thwart President Trump’s mandate from the American people to remove criminal illegal aliens from our country.
“Under President Trump and Secretary Mullin, DHS will continue to fight for the detention and removal of criminal illegal aliens who have no right to be in our country,” she said.
Guerra Morales was among at least a dozen Cuban nationals who boarded a commuter plane in Nueva Gerona, Cuba, on March 19, 2003.
He ended up assaulting its crew members and forcing the pilot to fly to Key West, according to the order for his release from ICE detention.
Guerra Morales was eventually arrested by the US Marshals Service and convicted of aircraft piracy and conspiracy to interfere with a flight crew and sentenced to 22 years behind bars.

Having worked inside bureaucratic organizations I have watched minor employees stymie the will of the management. President Trueman said, “I feel sorry for Isenhower. He was a general. He gave orders and they were carried out. As president, he’ll give orders and find later that nothing happened.” In corporations I watched people stop efforts intended to keep the company alive. I asked one lower-level manager why he was blocking an effort intended to save his job; our jobs. He was furious about a promotion he felt he deserved but didn’t get. I pointed if this effort failed, he’d lose his job. He was spitting mad and didn’t care. The company went out of business. Not just because of this one man, but because a whole lot of people wanted their tiny bit of revenge even though it cost them their jobs. This is how organizations work...or fail to work.
Why didn’t this one man get deported in seven months? Probably a combination of problems. I watched a county clerk destroy the plans of the Loral corporation by hiding their requests for approvals. A New York lawyer for Loral had called him a slow southern yokel. He smiled and said, “I’ll take care of that.” He put the requests in his middle drawer, and they stayed there until Loral ended up selling the land at a loss.
There’s no telling what actually happened or failed to happen. To make sure things happen a manager needs to stay on top of every issue. There must be thousands of issues and hundreds of uncooperative employees stopping things for any number of reasons.
