Zelensky warns NATO is running out of time as ‘protection is needed today, not years from now’

Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a stark warning to NATO: Europe cannot afford to wait years for a new generation of anti-ballistic missile systems while Russia continues expanding its missile attacks.

Speaking at the NATO Defence Industries Forum in Ankara, the Ukrainian president said ballistic missiles remain “Russia’s last major advantage” and called for the rapid development of affordable, mass-produced European air-defence systems.

His warning came after Russia launched another devastating missile and drone assault on Kyiv, killing 26 people in the second major attack on the Ukrainian capital in just four days.

The strikes highlighted a growing weakness in Ukraine’s air-defence network: a critical shortage of US-made Patriot PAC-3 interceptors, among the few systems capable of reliably countering ballistic missiles.

Zelensky argued that Europe’s need for stronger protection cannot be postponed until the end of the decade.

"Protection is needed today, not years from now,” he told defence officials.

While Ukraine has become increasingly effective at countering drones and cruise missiles, ballistic missiles remain one of Moscow’s most difficult weapons to intercept.

Russia has increasingly relied on high-speed missile attacks against Ukrainian cities, forcing Kyiv to spend limited air-defence ammunition to protect civilians and critical infrastructure.

The pressure is intensifying as Moscow expands its use of missile and drone combinations designed to overwhelm Ukrainian defences.

For Kyiv, the problem is not only technology — it is supply.

Two things I’m sick of hearing in the news: the World Cup and anything about Zelensky.

Yawn. This is the worst war ever. War without end. I sort of want both parties to lose.

Ukraine’s Shortage of Patriot Missiles Leaves Kyiv Undefended

Ukraine was unable to intercept any of the 23 Russian ballistic missiles that crashed into the Kyiv area in the early hours of Monday. Russia’s nearly unimpeded strikes are the consequence of a global dearth of interceptors for the U.S.-made Patriot antimissile system, a shortage compounded by this year’s U.S.-led war with Iran.

Ukraine is going to win this, we are told. Russia can’t advance.

Russia will fold soon, I am told.

Little z, relax and enjoy your large pot of money and your piano.

Yeah, I don’t give a crap about either country. Both are corrupt to the core.

Ukraine is not fully depopulated yet, so Z’s and EU’s work is not yet done.

It can only be refilled with stateless Arabs and South Asians once all the native men have been killed.

So back to one of the main points that miffed the Russians, a NATO member on their southern border.

I’ll credit Zelenski with understanding the problem more so than the NATO war weasels here who insist ‘increased missile production’ will win the day at some point in the future.

“So back to one of the main points that miffed the Russians, a NATO member on their southern border.”

But then, Finland, Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania and Poland are already NATO members on the Russian border. Once Russia conquers Ukraine, Putin will use this same argument to attack and conquer them.

Putin’s goal if he can get away with is to be the Russian ruler who restored the Imperial (1914) borders. He should have done the east first. That would have been more doable and Europe\US would have hardly cared.

When the Ukraine decided to separate from the old Soviets, new Russia, in 1991, they failed to consider they would be having to protect themselves from the backlash even if it was over 30 years later. Part of this need to separate was having to defend it militarily and they failed in this miserably. When the US separated from Briton we were prepared to take them on and did in 1812 when Briton forcibly shanghaied American citizens for their ships, 36 years after the start of the revolution. We took on the responsibility. The Ukraine hasn’t and still don’t. They need to stand alone, make the deals, and work at working with everyone to secure their country. You can only assist those that want it. The Ukraine wants a handout, not a hand up.

That would have sounded more plausible 4 years ago, as we are half way through year five it is time to recognize that Ukraine fights pretty well against what was the world’s second best army on February 21, 2022 and which has called in the North Korean army and Islamic Chechen forces to help them.

Imagine a past where every country we helped fought as well as Ukraine does.

Zelensky sounds like someone who feels like they’re in the crosshairs.
