Huntington Beach has erupted after a judge ordered the city to adopt ranked-choice voting for council members — amid fears it could destroy the Republican supermajority.
Orange County Superior Court Judge Craig Griffin ruled late June that the MAGA enclave needs to move away from its at-large system after a years-long court battle.
A wave of Southern California municipalities have been forced to change the way they vote in recent years as courts found at-large is unfavorable to minority voters under the California Voting Rights.
The push is being led by Malibu’s activist Democratic lawyer Kevin Shenkman, who has spent decades suing and threatening cities across the region to stop at-large voting.
It comes as Huntington Beach led the West Coast for its show of patriotism on Fourth of July, with an insane fireworks extravaganza that drew about 500,000 to its famous shores.

File this under the heading, “When judges legislate from the bench.”
No judge has that authority.
The beat goes on and the world keeps
turning as time moves on. So be it.
Rank choice voting is a scam as seen in Alaska where most Alaska voters chose a Republican but they ended up with a Democrat representative.
I wonder if the ruling on racial Gerrymandering has bearing on this case.
Rigged Choice Voting
The Huntington Beach Fireworks Extravaganza, known as "Fireworks Over the Ocean," is the grand finale of the city’s Independence Day celebrations—the largest 4th of July event west of the Mississippi. Presented by the Mayer Family Foundation, the historic 9:00 p.m. display features dazzling pyrotechnics launched directly from the iconic Huntington Beach Pier.
The show illuminates the Pacific coastline, drawing hundreds of thousands of spectators to the sand and downtown area. While the display is completely free to view from the beach, attendees can purchase premium, reserved seating on the pier through the Fireworks Over the Ocean portal.
The pyrotechnic show is also broadcast online. The fireworks cap off a full day of festivities that includes the Surf City 5K Run, the massive 4th of July Parade, and a lively Main Street Block party.
“ The judge rejected district-based elections, concluding that ranked-choice voting better preserves the city’s charter requirement that every voter elect every council member.”
Actually it does the opposite. It assures that many voters’ second or third choice gets elected. The Save Our Democracy gang can shove it up their Dominion.
EC
Craig Griffin rules that Mexico now owns the town founded by William Newland.
Good to know, Craig.
When do you plan to go back to England?
Whattaya gonna do about it? Who will stop them? It’s California remember?
“Ranked choice” is pretty much evil.
And the cheat continues unabated...
Can’t have all that freedom.
I don’t know how the ‘Rank (we) Choose Voting’ counting system is Constitutional. Many times your vote is shuffled around and ends up counting for a candidate you would not have voted for in the first place. Or as the left does it ... we shuffle your vote around until we get the result we want.
YOU ARE THE MINORITY!! every vote is cast by THE MAJORITY, so of course your vote is NOT FAVORABLE For you!! THATS WHAT DEMOCRACY IS .
Anyone who cant see these ruling as a twisted logic is uneducated and probably shouldn't vote.
This because democraps destroying 95% of the State isn’t enough...
This system is commonly used for municipal and county governing bodies, as well as for U.S. House seats in states with small populations (e.g., Alaska, Wyoming). Proponents argue it encourages candidates to appeal to the whole community and reduces district-specific infighting. However, critics note that it can lead to racially and politically homogenous bodies, as a voting majority (even 50%) can win 100% of the seats, often diluting the voting power of minority groups. Consequently, many at-large systems have been struck down under the Voting Rights Act for failing to provide fair representation to communities of color.
Oh, the inhumanity of having homogenous enclaves that operate for the betterment of their entire community. Orange County will join the ranks of a destructive tendency that the Democrats always manage to destroy, and never improve.
But trust me, if Whites were the minority none of these people would give a s**t about minority representation. That door only swings one way. I’m guessing in another generation or so we will see that played out.
It has all been downhill since the Warren court with its “one man, one vote” democratic nonsense
IMO, This is a direct attack on a Republican city, to turn it blue (and turn it to s***).
Huntington Beach has been fighting the state for years over a housing mandate:
“The city was ordered to adopt a housing element zoning for 13,368 new homes (including affordable units) by the end of the decade.”
Which they lost:
“Huntington Beach has lost its multi-year legal battle against California’s state housing mandates after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to review its appeal in February 2026, leaving intact lower court rulings that the city must comply. “
“Ranked Voting” is designed to give Democrats the edge, ask Alaska:
“Ranked-choice voting (RCV) has provided Democrats with a decisive edge in specific elections, most notably enabling Mary Peltola to win Alaska’s at-large House seat in 2022 and compete strongly in the 2026 Senate race.”
