A Delta Air Lines plane carrying 52 passengers and six crew members was hit by fireworks as it prepared to land at a Chicago airport on Saturday night.

The flight from Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson Airport to Midway International Airport "reportedly made contact with a firework while on descent," a spokesperson for the airline told the BBC.

"The flight safely landed and taxied to the gate," they added. There were no injuries and the incident was reported to aviation authorities.

The aircraft was struck as millions across the United States celebrated the nation's 250th anniversary with fireworks - part of the annual tradition to commemorate independence.

Delta flight 1076 took off from Atlanta at 19:51 EDT (00:51 BST) and landed in Chicago at 20:33 CDT (02:33 BST).

"We just had a firework hit our plane," a pilot told air traffic control, a recording of the incident shows. The pilot said it had occurred at about 200ft (61m).

"We're just hoping it was just a mortar that went off underneath but definitely felt a big bang."

Before the incident, controllers can be heard warning of the presence of fireworks.

"Delta 1076... use caution, there are multiple homes near the approach end shooting off fireworks," an air traffic control officer said.

"There have been multiple reports as you can imagine," the controller adds on the radio. "The city is aware. They said they would notify the Chicago police, but you know, I don't know what they will do."

The BBC has contacted city officials regarding the report of fireworks being set off from homes near the airport. The Chicago Police Department told the BBC the aircraft "was struck by an unknown object" and that it caused "minor paint damage".

The Federal Aviation Administration said the incident happened around 20:30 CDT, according to CBS News,...

Likely the usual commies in Chiraq.

Since the riots had fireworks thrown at police and ICE agents, this kind of recklessness had to be next.

In Britain the African immigrants threw fireworks into a crowd near a targeted young woman, rushed into the chaos to abduct her, and then gang rape her for days in a rented room.
Very few were caught.

I used to love flying around on July 4th just after dark, looking at the fireworks from above.

I’ve landed at Midway on the 4th in the past—and it looks worse than Beirut or Baghdad on short final with all the fireworks (professional and otherwise). Always surprised they allow the planned bigger ones.

Landed into Boston one 4th of July many years ago.
Fireworks exploding below us.

I took friends up in a 59 model Piper Tri-Pacer, that I was part owner of, on both 1974 and 75 July 4th evenings.

1975 was more memorable,.. because...

...the brakes failed on rollout landing at the little Mercer Co (IL) airport. We rolled all of the way to the far end, with the left wing barely clearing the fence as I turned right on the turf.

Post flight inspection showed a cracked brake fluid line. (I tracked that plane down 2 years ago. Now in OR, its been converted to a taildragger, and completely redone including avionics. Looks great.)

I’ve had a bullet go thru my wing on my Citabria while I was flying it. 1988 and I fly out of Compton, CA.

Was the landing pattern anywhere near the Obama Library???

It DOES look like a WWII Flak Tower. Maybe Obama was just shooting his mouth off again and the plane just got too close.

I’m sure the approach to the airport is a very desirable neighborhood.

“Maybe Obama was just shooting his mouth off again and the plane just got too close.” The plane would have been covered in green bile if that were the case.

It’s the South Side of Chicago, so I think you can guess.

A good friend and client owned a corporate charter service and a twin engine Cessna. I loved to fly, so I would frequently fill the copilot’s seat just for the view.

**.. a twin engine Cessna.**

My dad flew charter for about 28 years. Mostly in twin Cessnas. From 67 to 73, he was co-owner in a 59 model 310. I have about 70 hours flying 310s, maybe a dozen in a 401. But hundreds of hours working on twin Cessnas. Pretty familiar with their innards.

Loved watching reruns of ‘Sky King’ around 1960-62. It was great advertising for the C310. I was 12 when I first rode in that 59 model. I was thrilled big time!
