Some EU nations now see Hormuz transit fees as unavoidable: report

Several leading European nations now accept that ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz will need to pay fees to Iran and Oman, according to a Bloomberg report Thursday.

The possibility of service fees following the US and Israeli war with Iran is now reportedly viewed by some EU countries as unavoidable. Some Gulf Arab officials are said to also privately share this view, though it may not reflect their governments' official positions.

The type and amount of fees that nations would accept remains unclear. The US and Gulf Arab countries maintain that Iran and Oman cannot impose any charges for the Hormuz strait. Concerns focus on compliance with international maritime law and the risk of setting a precedent for other countries to charge fees on different waterways.

While accepting the prospect of additional costs, European countries have urged Iranian and Omani officials not to discriminate against ships based on nationality, the report said.

Last week, Oman reportedly told European officials that returning to the pre-war status quo in the Strait of Hormuz is impossible. Ships passing through the waterway, which serves as a critical chokepoint for Gulf energy supplies, may face charges for services related to de-polluting the strait and navigation costs.

Commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has increased since Iran and the US signed an interim peace deal around two weeks ago. The agreement, combined with American military support for vessels, has raised oil flows through the chokepoint from countries like Saudi Arabia to more than 10 million barrels per day, slightly above half of pre-war levels. Iran has also increased its crude exports after the US lifted a blockade of its ports.

It feels like just five months ago that the Strait of Hormuz was open, with no fees or tributes required to transit it.

The middle east has always had bandits who positioned themselves at choke points and extracted payment from all who desired passage.

I read about it in one of my son’s middle school social studies books. The Nile had numerous points at which tribute was taken from every passing vessel. Each was operated by a family.

If Trump caves on this, he’s lost me. Yeah, I know...no big deal, but it expresses how I feel on this subject.

Works in our favor. They pay a toll with no guarantee they won’t go up or keep the strait open. Iran’s cash cow. Oman-I don’t get it unless they want in the action too. In the meantime our production goes up and the other gulf states grin and bear it. After all it’s the Middle East you know.

Trump should say yes to Iran. Then we drill oil in Venezuela and end the war in Ukraine so we can buy Russian oil.

Piracy in international waters. We went through this once with France and Tripoli.

Do the fees offset the cost to insure tankers as they go through the Strait? They may have done the math and figured its cheaper to just pay them.

The insurance cost was pretty high. That is a price that a lot of people were unaware of.

Destroying Iran’s ability to export would fix it. Mine the ports, bomb Kharg or destroy all bridges and power plants, etc. Occupying Kharg is not an option. A certain timeline for an uprising could be taken into account without our elections being figuring in.

Nations have every right to charge fees for inlet access, but it should be worked into the oil/gas/ammonia price.

I know that we're told things like this over and over and over. But for a trip down memory lane (over the past 10 or so years, but before the current war):

Iran every now and then seizing cargo ships making the price of oil skyrocket. (Cargo ships Iran seized while Biden was in office)

Iran captured a small US navy vessel and held American sailors prisoner for a short while. https://www.reuters.com/article/world/us-sailors-captured-by-iran-were-held-at-gunpoint-us-military-idUSKCN0UW1TC/

Iran did the same with British sailors twice (https://search.brave.com/search?q=iran+held+british+sailors+prisoner&summary=1&conversation=094632f9766c877e5b1e4c1baaff72086d9b

Iran's proxy Houthis attacked ships going through the Suez Canal (Red Sea attacks) Houthi attacks in Red Sea before Iran War

I like to fuss about Trump bombing Iran off and on for 2 months without Congress' approval. But IMHO it's incorrect to say that Trump caused the problems of Iran interfering with maritime traffic.

Just like I fussed at Obama for bombing Libya for 7 months without Congress' approval, but I didn't blame Obama for Gaddafi being a thorn in our side for decades.

Not according to the law of the sea. Specifically, see transit passage (natural Straits).
