Pope to visit migrant hotspot on July 4 in ‘unofficial message to Trump’
The Telegraph ^ | June 30, 2026 | Iona Cleave

Pope Leo will not be celebrating the United States' 250th birthday; instead, he will visit a poverty-stricken migrant island on July 4.

The first American pontiff has been deeply critical of Donald Trump's immigration agenda and war against Iran, culminating in an unprecedented public falling-out with the president.

On the day that marks the United States' independence from Britain, Leo XIV will visit the tiny Sicilian island of Lampedusa, the gateway for migrants and refugees trying to reach Europe's shores.

His decision appears to be a deliberate but subtle rebuke of the Trump administration as the president pushes on with his sweeping immigration crackdown.

The Vatican has made no official comment on whether the Pope, who has sought to downplay his nationality, would not attend the July 4 celebrations.

However, a Vatican official called it an "unofficial message" to Washington.

Leo XIV will lay flowers at the tombs of migrants who drowned trying to cross one of the deadliest migration routes in the world, while Mr Trump throws a lavish celebration of American history.

Pope Leo is following in the footsteps of his predecessor, Pope Francis, who made a historic visit to the island in 2013 and celebrated Mass on an altar of shipwrecked migrant boats.

“Pope Leo will not be celebrating the United States’ 250th birthday...”

Why would he? He is an enemy of the America people.

Wake me when they start housing migrants in the Vatican.

The Pope became a Peruvian citizen years ago. He’s American by birth only, but it doesn’t seem to mean much to him.

You want to give an unofficial message to Trump, Leo? Open the Vatican gates and let 100,000 Syrian, Iraqi or Palestinian refugees into your palace. Let them stay there for a year or two. If they start raping the nuns and slitting the throats of your priests, cover it up. That would really show him. You doing fly-by disaster tourism for a photo op to send a message seems a little phony and shallow for a Pope.

Under the Fundamental Law of Vatican City State, entry and residency are tightly controlled, with illegal entry punishable by prison sentences and heavy fines.

Simple. Move them to the vatican. Even frank 2.0 should be able to make that happen.

This Pope likes political messages. Only fair to ask him to explain if and why he voted for pro abortion Democrats such as Obama, Durbin ,Pritzker and Johnson while he lived in Chicago. So far he has avoided the question.

I have mentioned this before.

Awhile back I did a rough calculation. Based on its size, Vatican City can easily take in 2500 immigrants. And of course the Church has the money to feed, clothe, and house them all.

How many immigrants has the Vatican actually taken in?
I’m guessing that the number is around zero.

Fun fact:
Back in 2025 the Vatican actually increased its penalties for illegal entry into the city.

Evidently this is all going on without Leo’s knowledge.
🤔

Trump and many of us have an "unofficial" message for the "Pope":

What a freaking hypocrite. How many of those destitute migrants has he taken into Vatican City? - oh that's right, the Vatican is surrounded by high walls and doesn't let migrants in.

Same as the old Pope...
