Shabana Mahmood's Ukrainian-style refugee sponsorship scheme will open the door to thousands of new migrants, the Tories have claimed.
The Home Secretary is pressing forward with plans to provide "safe and legal routes" for refugees fleeing conflict zones to enter Britain.
The scheme will be modelled on Canada's community sponsorship scheme, which allows people to sponsor refugees privately by committing to at least 12 months of financial and emotional support, and the UK's Homes for Ukraine programme, introduced following Russia's invasion in 2022.
There will be a strict annual cap on numbers but the target is not yet known. Those offered refuge will probably be coming from the countries most in need, such as Sudan and Eritrea.
The Tories claim Ms Mahmood's plan could let in tens of thousands more migrants from outside Europe.
Chris Philp, the shadow home secretary, said: "We have already seen 75,000 illegal immigrants enter the country by small boat since the election, including 1,000 in the last week alone.
"Until this is stopped completely, we should not be creating new routes into the UK for asylum claimants. Many of those not admitted to the UK under any legal scheme would still try to enter the UK by small boat anyway. So the Government's plan will make no difference to illegal small boat crossings, which would simply continue, in addition to any legal entrants."
He added: "The public has had enough of open borders under Labour. Labour's immigration minister even wants to let low-wage migrants here on temporary work visas stay forever.
"Left-wing Labour MPs don't believe in border control. They are pushing the current Home Secretary and immigration minister to weaken our borders and they will probably push Andy Burnham to open up our borders as well."

Ordinary people in Canada, UK, France, and other places are angry and vocal about current politics.
The move “Citizen Vigilante”, whether it is a good movie or not, has clearly struck a nerve with many people.
And the politicians are still pushing as hard as they can to import third world savages so that western societies can be destroyed.
The politicians hate the voters. I refuse to believe that the politicians were “voted in” by the “voters”. I think all western governments are installed by various Intelligence Communities. The unreasonable hatred of Trump is because he somehow got in without their permission.
Labour won an overwhelming victory in the last UK general election with only 34% of the popular vote. The opposition parties split the rest.

I expect the new PM to exploit the current split and call a snap election which will cement the grip the communists have on England.
