Sir Keir Starmer is locked in a stand-off with his home secretary Shabana Mahmood after the prime minister refused to allow her to immediately sack her junior minister.
Mahmood has demanded the dismissal of Mike Tapp, minister for migration and citizenship, after he wrote an unauthorised article calling for overseas care workers to be exempt from tough new UK immigration controls.
Tapp wrote in The Times that it was his “strong belief” that migrant care workers should not have to wait longer to seek permanent settlement in the UK.
Mahmood proposed last year that migrants would have to spend a decade in the UK, rather than five years, before they could secure “indefinite leave to remain” — which grants the right to work, study and claim benefits in the UK permanently.
Tapp’s suggestion that care workers could be exempt from the reform would represent a carve-out for the sector, where there are significant skills shortages, but Mahmood was not told in advance that he had written the article.
But Downing Street is still considering whether or not to allow Mahmood to sack Tapp even though his action appeared to fall foul of the ministerial code, according to government insiders.
The row highlights disarray at the top of the government since Starmer announced on Monday that he would step down within weeks as prime minister after losing the backing of Labour MPs.
Although Andy Burnham, former Greater Manchester mayor, is expected to succeed Starmer, there is currently a leadership hiatus that will not be resolved until mid-July at the earliest.

“care workers...significant skills shortages”
In my area, CNA education costs $495.
If you are patient, friendly, and don’t mind #1, #2 and hard work, then you have the most essential skills.
Ah yes, Mahmood is a British name going back to the days of Potters, Bakers and Smiths.
United Kaliphate coming before the end of the next decade.
No wonder he’s useless look what he married
If you can’t trust Mahmoud who can you trust ?

If you read the article though she was proposing tougher rules and he was against them.
Kabuki theatre.
They both serve at the pleasure of their Deep State.
My comment had absolutely no relevancy to the article other then the fact a High ranking official(one of many similarly named) is named Mahmood in the UK.
I do not care for her policies, I care about the islamification of the once great Britian.
