President Donald Trump said late Wednesday that two powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela had caused what he described as "a devastating number of deaths" as officials continued assessing the extent of the disaster.
Trump said the United States was prepared to assist with the ongoing response.
"The U.S.A. stands ready, willing, and able to help!" Trump said. "I have instructed all agencies of our government to get ready to move quickly. We will be there for our new and great friends."

The United States is well known for assisting victims of major disasters in other countries.
A former enemy is now a friend. Is that a bad thing?
At least we’re not paying millions for circumcisions in Zimbabwe any longer. And Venezuela isn’t doing elections fraud in the USA anymore. I’d rather pay for authentic humanitarian aid than line the pockets of domestic and foreign anti-Americans.
The @StateDept has already mobilized a disaster assistance team and task force to deliver and coordinate critical assistance to the Venezuelan people. Working with our partners in the interim Venezuelan government, the U.S. will be sending search and rescue teams, medical and humanitarian supplies and other resources in the crucial first days after this tragic natural disaster.
