President Donald Trump abruptly canceled his plans to sign a major, bipartisan housing bill Wednesday, saying he will not do so until Congress passes the SAVE America Act, a sweeping elections bill that has become a focal point of his second term.
“Today’s Housing News Conference and Signing is hereby cancelled until such time as we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT, which I consider to be a National Emergency,” he posted on his Truth Social account.
It was not immediately clear whether he still plans to sign the housing bill or veto it. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for additional comment.
Trump has repeatedly pressed Republicans to pass the SAVE America Act, which would overhaul elections in all 50 states and add new proof of citizenship and voter ID requirements.
But Republican leadership insists they do not have the votes to pass it, given Democrats’ strong opposition and an unwillingness among Republicans to get rid of the legislative filibuster.
Trump’s decision to cancel the signing ceremony for the housing bill that passed the House and Senate this week with huge, bipartisan majorities will only add to the tension between the White House and Senate Republicans.
Trump was also expected to speak to Senate Republicans during their weekly lunch Wednesday, after being invited by Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., to discuss SAVE and other issues. That lunch is still going forward, a Scott spokesperson told NBC News.
The housing bill aims to lower housing costs, in part by building more homes and restricting large investors from buying up single-family homes. It gives Republicans a major legislative accomplishment to point to as voters rank the cost of living as a top issue in the November elections.

If we don’t improve the economic condition of young Americans, Mamdani and the destructive ideas he espouses will continue to spread. When young people have faith in their own economic future, when they own homes, and when they get married and have children, they have a stake in the country. They have skin in the game. Perpetually single, childless renters are easier to radicalize by those who want to destroy Western Civilization.
We need a moon shot, Manhattan Project-style:
10 million new homes in 3 years
20 million deportations and self-deportations
Reform and reduce legal immigration
We MUST restore the social compact for the next generation of Americans. Thank you Tucker Carlson for helping to highlight these issues.
Trump isn't helping on this one.
Congress is not passing the SAVE Act, which in its most important part (Electoral College) is unconstitutional.
Move along.
When the Senate was debating the SAVE ACT in March 2026, the Democrats were being clobbered in the Court of Public Opinion.
Thus it is important for Trump to keep the SAVE ACT in the news.
Thune needs to get off his high horse and return the Senate to debating the SAVE ACT from now until the November elections.
We need enough time after the inevitable lawsuits are overturned and before the elections that it can be enforceable in November. Thune dragging his feet has earned him a place in RINO infamy.
Where is this happening? Mostly in blue cities. NYC is supposed to be expensive. You didn't stay in NYC after you got off the Ellis Island 100 years ago. More opportunities elsewhere (plus it's cheaper).
If the SAVE Act is not passed, anything that improves the economic condition of young Americans will be short lived.
My two useless senatorettes are all about the daca bill. SAVE act? Not so much. I called one of them out about it. The response I got. “I’ve been working on getting all the epstein files released.” HUH? Representative? Not representin’ me. Or majority of Nevadans.
Thank you, Mr. President. PLEASE do not renew on this pledge!
“When the Senate was debating the SAVE ACT in March 2026, the Democrats were being clobbered in the Court of Public Opinion.”
The Court of Public Opinion ≠ elections.
If we don’t have secure, BELIEVABLE elections, nothing else matters.
Pass the SAVE ACT!!!!
Simple. Break the SAVE act into individual requirements. Have votes on each.
Good
And buy off that cretin Tuberville
“”””20 million deportations and self-deportations”””
As of today, Trump’s team has deported something like 2 million illegals.
If Trump’s Team were actually successful in deporting the other 90% of the illegals, there would be millions of housing units available for Americans to buy or rent.
The so called Housing bill will do absolutely nothing to the price of building in California, it is a bare minimum of $200,000 just for permits to build a modest single family home.
If the SAVE Act isn’t passed, and the Supreme Court enshrines birthright citizenship (if that is to be the case I hope they punt with a narrow decision,) the country is doomed.
Sadly, a lot of Trump’s resolve has degraded into theatrics.
Sign the damn housing bill. You will never get everything you want.
