Trump's top general WALKS OUT of Pentagon as Hegseth moves to gut his command in sweeping purge

Donald Trump's top Army general has abruptly resigned as Pete Hegseth pushes to demote his command and purge the Pentagon's senior ranks, sidelining top officers with little explanation.

General Chris Donahue, 56, will step down as head of US Army operations in Europe and Africa, with his retirement expected to be announced as soon as Wednesday.

Donhue is a decorated officer who commanded the Army's elite Delta Force and amassed two decades of combat experience. He has long been seen inside the Army as one of its top leaders and a potential future chief of staff.

As commander of the 82nd Airborne Division during the 2021 US withdrawal from Afghanistan, Donahue was the last American service member to leave the country, captured in a now-famous night-vision image as he boarded a C-17.

His departure comes as Hegseth was preparing to downgrade Donahue's post from a four-star command to a three-star one, a source told ABC News.

Going from a four-star to a three-star post strips the command of the military's highest rank, signaling reduced prestige and authority.

Four-star officers can only hold positions designated for that rank, so when no such command is available, early retirement is often the only option left.

The effort is reportedly part of Hegseth's broader plan to sideline and purge senior officials within the Pentagon.

Anytime most anyone in the federal government resigns, it’s a good thing.

Probably a hide-bound road block to Pete's doctrine.
A clever way to get him to retire.

Commanding Gen. Christopher Donahue — who also leads NATO's Allied Land Command — will relinquish his command on July 2. Donahue is best known as the last U.S. soldier to leave Afghanistan in August 2021, marking the end of the US' nearly 20-year war launched after 911. The moment he stepped onto a C-17 cargo plane was captured in an iconic photo taken through night vision goggles.

Reads like he was one of the people responsible for the Afghan departure debacle and he decided to have it written up like he was a hero.

Probably a good thing he is being pushed out

Good. Too many flag officers are politicians first.

I don’t see that Europe/Africa warrants a Four Star command.

We have few interests in Africa and most of those are covered by JFC Naples, 4 stars.

Another 4 star command is US European Command.

There’s a bunch of extra 4 star commands out there. If you promote a guy to 4 stars you gotta give ‘em some turf.

In WW2 we had seven four-star officers.

Today we have forty - for a much smaller force.

Do we need that many?

In 1939, in the run up to WW2, George Marshall - whom FDR had jumped 30+ places in the seniority line - fired almost all of the Army’s senior officers. Replacing them with younger, fitter, officers.

The established seniority system had filled the Army’s ranks with the tired, out of shape, and elderly.

In fact, nearly the only older officer who was retained was Patton. Who was 54, but far from lethargic.

Ther are currently 40 four-star generals/flag officers in the Department of War. Thinning them out is vital to the future of our armed forces; we never have needed this many - nobody does.

“Trump's top general”?

Grok:

President Joe Biden nominated him for promotion to four-star general and assignment as Commanding General of U.S. Army Europe-Africa (and Commander, Allied Land Command).

This occurred in November 2024. The Senate confirmed the promotion on December 2, 2024 (after a brief hold by a Republican senator over questions related to the 2021 Afghanistan withdrawal), and Donahue was promoted and assumed command on December 10, 2024.

The U.S. withdrawl from Afghanistan was a poo exhibition, and a lot more generals should have been retired as a result. Some excellent commentary on this from the much more qualified than I CP.

@CynicalPublius

Lieutenant General Lloyd Ralston Fredendall was a WWII-era general who was widely considered as one of the finest leaders of his time, and was therefore given command of II Corps in the North African campaign. His leadership resulted in one of the USA’s most ignominious defeats in all of our country’s history at Kasserine Pass. He was relieved for cause.

General Christopher Todd Donahue is a contemporary general who has been widely considered as one of the finest leaders of our era, and was therefore given command of the 82nd Airborne Division in the retreat from Afghanistan. His leadership resulted in one of the USA’s most ignominious defeats in all of our country’s history in and around Bagram AB. He was not relieved for cause.

Until now.

Pete Hegseth is simply restoring accountability to our senior officer ranks. No longer will screw-ups go unpunished if your rank is high enough.

Thank God.

(BTW, do you know who replaced Fredendall? George S. Patton, that’s who.)

The military is top heavy and.needed to be adjusted. Unfortunately, some good people will be forced out, and some bad ones with political connections will remain. This is as it’s always been in RIF’s.
