Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell was admitted to a hospital Sunday, his spokesperson said, but there was no immediate information about why he was there or his prognosis.
McConnell, 84, was the longest serving Senate leader in history before stepping aside from that role while finishing his final term, which ends in January.
“Senator McConnell was admitted to the hospital this morning. He is receiving excellent care,” spokesperson David Popp said in a statement without elaboration. It was not immediately clear whether the Kentucky lawmaker was in Washington, his home state or elsewhere.
McConnell’s health has been a subject of scrutiny for years.
He fell and sprained his wrist while walking out of a GOP luncheon in December 2024. He was hospitalized with a concussion in March 2023 and missed several weeks of work after falling in a Washington hotel. After he returned, he twice froze up during news conferences that summer, staring vacantly ahead before colleagues and staff came to his assistance.

Sad to leave behind a legacy where nobody really gives a sh—.
McConnell has been brain dead for months now. His vote is cast by his staff.

Yea, he’s the red DiFi.
Receiving, no doubt, the best gas station Somali Hospice Care money can buy.
Satan is waiting...
Nobody gives a crap anyway.
All his Anti-American crap is getting the better of him
No one “names” (i.e., appoints) a replacement if Sen. Mitch McConnell dies or leaves office now. Kentucky law, changed in 2024 by House Bill 622 (which overrode Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear’s veto), requires a special election to fill any U.S. Senate vacancy.
Current Process in Kentucky
The governor (currently Andy Beshear) must issue a proclamation calling for a special election.e88026
Kentucky is one of only a few states (along with North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin) that does not allow the governor to make a temporary appointment.
The special election is expedited: typically held within about 8 weeks (with specific notice periods—e.g., proclamation at least 56 days before the election).37fd45
The winner serves the remainder of the unexpired term (McConnell's current term ends in 2027).
This change was made by the Republican-controlled Kentucky legislature specifically to remove the governor's (or any future Democratic governor's) influence over a potential vacancy in McConnell's seat. Prior versions of the law had allowed limited gubernatorial appointment (from a party-submitted list), but that was stripped away.
Practical Notes
The Kentucky Republican Party's executive committee would likely nominate or influence the GOP candidate for the special election.
There would be no interim appointee; the seat would remain vacant until the special election is held and certified.
Gov. Beshear (Democrat, term ends 2027) has no direct role in selecting the person—only in formally calling the election.
This is governed by Kentucky state law (KRS 118.720 and related statutes) implementing the 17th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
I don’t like to wish bad outcomes, but I will make an exception here.
Mitch was a master of the Senate. Most times his skills were used for good but sometimes for bad, very bad. At times I have admired him and at times loathed him.
Still got Thune the puppet.
[Comment withheld, though reluctantly.]
I wish him no evil.
Truthfully, I don’t wish the miserable POS anything at all.
Probably had a TIA and became unresponsive……
