Early results show Swiss voters reject right-wing’s bid to cap population at 10 million

Voters in Switzerland have cast their final ballots on Sunday on an initiative championed by the top right-wing party to cap the rich Alpine country’s population at 10 million. Early results showed Swiss voters were leaning against it.

The populist Swiss People’s Party, which has the most seats in parliament, has stirred up and fostered anti-migration sentiment over the years, notably about an influx of workers from the neighboring European Union.

Some have dubbed the proposal a “Swiss Brexit” because it could jeopardize Switzerland’s deep ties to the European Union anchored by deals that foster economic growth, cultural ties and cross-border travel, among other things. Switzerland is not one of the EU’s 27 member states, but it is all but surrounded by four of them

Recent polling from the gfs.bern agency suggested that it could be a close contest.

Preliminary results shared by the federal government showed that nearly 53% of voters rejected the proposal, with nationwide turnout exceeding 57%. Results were still pending from many of Switzerland’s 26 cantons.

The number of people living in Switzerland has soared by nearly one-quarter over the last generation, and foreigners today make up nearly one-third of the population.

Or income tax system.

Anyone that would tolerate that is a moron just on the face of it.

"Deep ties."

What percentage of those are Muslims, vs. Eastern Europeans.

Capping the population was a right-wing proposal? Really? It’s usually the far-left to propose such things.

Never been to Switzerland, so I must admit I'm curious.
Who mows their lawns, changes their sheets and cleans their pools?
Are there any convenience stores there?
Do Swiss citizens do all of this themselves?

What about the mail-in ballots? They oddly are always enough to close in on 15%. Just keep counting them until you win. If you haven’t won, just keep counting.

The population cap was immigration and work permits restrictions. The population could grow past 10 million by birth.

Per Wikipedia the muslim population there is 5.4%.

If the population there is capped and everyone lives to 100 the average age will then be 50. Too high? As for mowing lawns Africans are a short plane ride away. 6 month work visas for the dirt poor nations provided they go home the rest of the year and are able to start up a lawn mower.

Naaah, it all about capping present population so illegals cannot be allowed to invade.
Like Germany during Merkel, the Swiss have taken the knee.

I used to travel there for work frequently until 2020. I observed most of the type of work you are referring to were Germans and Eastern Europeans.

Also, they actually have tons of convenience stores. On weekends I would buy a couple of cans of beer at a convenience store for a reasonable price and drink them as I walked around the lake. They allow open consumption, or at least that was going to be my “understanding” if anyone said something.

Also the trains were fantastic and very safe. They didn’t tolerate bad behavior, and the stations often had heavily armed personnel at the ready.

It depends on how you are capping it via birth control (left wing) or immigration control (right wing).

Historically Switzerland had guest workers but unlike Germany, guest worker meant just that. You were there on a contract and then you had to leave. You would not be given a contract long enough to apply for permanent residency and staying in the country illegally meant you could never apply for permanent legal residency.

I don’t know if they’ve become soft and slack since then but they used to have everything strictly in order. That’s why Switzerland was rich, clean, modern, and very very low crime.
