Trump threatens to ‘take back’ DC if democratic socialist is elected as mayor

President Trump on Thursday suggested the federal government could “take back” Washington if the democratic socialist candidate wins the race to replace outgoing Mayor Muriel Bowser.

“I wouldn’t like it — and maybe we take back Washington, run it on the federal basis,” Trump said when asked what he would do if a “crazy socialist” were elected to the role.

“We won’t put up with it. We’re not going to lose our businesses,” he told reporters during an Oval Office event.

The president did not directly name the candidate, but he is likely talking about D.C. Council member Janeese Lewis George, a self-described democratic socialist, who has emerged as the front-runner in the mayoral race. Lewis George, who represents Ward 4, has centered her campaign on affordability, housing and public safety.

Recent polling shows her leading former D.C. Council member-at-large Kenyan McDuffie (D) by double digits.

The Democratic primary is scheduled for June 16.

Trump has repeatedly pushed for a greater role for his administration in running the district, citing crime, homelessness and other issues. Last August, he ordered the federal takeover of the city’s police department and deployed National Guard troops to Washington, citing concerns about the rising crime rate despite data showing the opposite.

“Affordability, housing, and safety.”

it’s almost become a chant among the leftist cult members. What it means in terms of actions is lost in the cliches, which the candidates seem to think will put them up and over, until they realize all the other candidates are bleating the same shit, with no ideas to back it up.

DC contains the largest concentration of parasites in the US.
.........

I voted in 2024 for the obliteration and draining of those parasites.

You’re talking about Congress right?

Trump should think big. Move the entire nation’s capital to a more favorable place...like Idaho or Montana (take Boise, Moscow, Blaine County and Missoula, out of the running, though).

“Affordability, housing, and safety.”

They all bleat that stuff ad nauseam. They’ve had 70 years controlling big cities and many states to succeed at that. But they constantly fail at that, over and over and over.

Yet they still get elected. The electorate is SO stupid that they are blind to Cause & Effect.

The Executive Branch does not have have ultimate authority over Washington, D.C. Congress does.

Home Rule Act.
The District of Columbia Home Rule Act is a United States federal law passed on December 24, 1973, which devolved certain congressional powers of the District of Columbia to local government, furthering District of Columbia home rule. In particular, it includes the District Charter (also called the Home Rule Charter), which provides for an elected mayor and the Council of the District of Columbia. The council is composed of a chair elected at large and twelve members, four of whom are elected at large, and one from each of the District’s eight wards. Council members are elected to four-year terms.

Under the “Home Rule” government, Congress reviews all legislation passed by the council before it can become law and retains authority over the District’s budget. Also, the President appoints the District’s judges, and the District still has no voting representation in Congress. Because of these and other limitations on local government, many citizens of the District continue to lobby for greater autonomy, such as complete statehood.

The President can take over the police.

Section 740 of the DC Home Rule Act, entitled “Emergency Control of Police” requires the mayor of DC to “provide, such services of the Metropolitan Police force as the President may deem necessary and appropriate” whenever the President of the United States determines that “special conditions of an emergency nature exist which require the use of the Metropolitan Police force for Federal purposes”. (The Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia or MPD is normally under control of the city government.) The President is required to notify the leaders of the Committee on the District of Columbia of the Senate and the House of Representatives in writing within 48 hours. The law requires Congress to approve the action within 30 days if it is in session, or after coming into session.

Thanks for posting this.

I believe President Trump knows that other than LE, judicial, etc, that he can’t “take over”, Washington, D.C. It’s schtick.

As noted, President Trump can make decisions about LE, judicial appointments, etc regarding Washington, DC.

Everything else is within the sole purview of Congress.

Trump should think big. Move the entire nation’s capital to a more favorable place...like Idaho or Montana

Then the bureaucracy would move with it, and Idaho would become DC.

It might take 30 to 100 years. Then move it again. Rotating capitals!
