How a British by-election in blue-collar town could seal the fate of UK’s PM Keir Starmer

Later this month, a by-election will take place in Britain that may seal the fate of the UK’s beleaguered prime minister, Keir Starmer. But it’s also sending a warning to all who believe that the fanatical leftists who now dominate progressive politics must be stopped if we’re still going to have a society worth living in.

It’s a warning not just for Britain but also for America’s Republicans, Vice President JD Vance and tech mogul Elon Musk, who are all expressing huge concern about the erosion of Britain’s historic identity and what this means for the West.

The by-election is for the parliamentary seat in Makerfield, a blue-collar town in the north of England. It’s been caused by the vaulting ambition of one man, Andy Burnham, a former minister in Tony Blair’s Labour government, whose recent popularity as mayor of Manchester has made him the go-to candidate to lever the terminally unpopular Starmer out of office.

Because he needs a seat in the House of Commons to do so, the sitting Labour MP obligingly moved out so that Burnham could contest it.

However, the assumption that he might romp home in a tribally Labour area is in doubt. The election is on a knife edge.

Burnham is resented as an unprincipled carpet-bagger. The main threat he faces, though, comes from a key change in British political life. Blue-collar former Labour voters no longer feel the party represents them. They view it now as a party of the intellectual elites, who have all but driven their nation off a cliff through promoting mass immigration and anti-western ideologies of race and gender.

In 2022 the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, announced his intention to create a baccalaureate to promote technical education to the city region’s young people. Upon his third re-election as mayor, Burnham committed to give “everyone who grows up [in Greater Manchester] an equal alternative to the university route so all our young people have a path in life and hope in their heart”.

At 14, students must choose which subjects to study to GCSE level. The MBacc fulfils a similar function to the English Baccalaureate (EBacc), in that it is a guide to help students in their choice, based on subjects which good universities consider necessary. Within the MBacc, seven job pathways exist, which correspond to the subjects and qualifications desired most by employers in each industry:

Construction and the Green Economy
Creative, Culture and Sport
Digital and Technology
Education and Early Years
Engineering and Manufacturing
Financial and Professional
Health and Social Care

English language and literature, maths, sciences and digital skills are ‘core qualifications’ and part of every pathway.

The Bee Network is an integrated transport network in Greater Manchester, England. It comprises bus, tram, cycling and walking routes. Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is expected to have commuter rail services joining the network in 2028. Initially unveiled in 2018, the project is aiming to create a London-style transport system.

In June 2022, Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham announced capped fares for buses from September 2022, in order to help with cost-of-living rises. The new fares would see full day fares capped at £5 and single trips capped at £2.
