When the world’s richest man left California — taking his multitrillion electric car and space companies with him — the Golden State lost out on billions of dollars in economic benefits.
Elon Musk’s SpaceX launched its record-breaking IPO on Friday, making him the world’s first trillionaire while enriching many employees and investors.
Musk didn’t travel to the New York Stock Exchange for the ceremonial bell ringing, instead choosing to celebrate at his company’s headquarters in South Texas — surrounded by some of the estimated 4,000 millionaires he created through the public offering.
It was a symbolic move for Musk, who’s relocation of SpaceX and Tesla to the Lone Star State cost California untold billions, said Dr. Wayne Winegarden of the Pacific Research Institute.
“The bottom line is this is exhibit A of why you don’t want to chase away businesses,” he told The California Post.

Sadly, the lessons will be lost on the CA commies.
Like the equally bozo-ifical New York mayor David Patterson expressing satisfaction that Rush Limbaugh was leaving the city, and the state, for Florida.
Elon's farewell message to California .
F Around and Find Out.
NY Post:
Who’s whose hoos?
It cost the state. No. It prevented the state from stealing it via taxation.
Will California learn anything from this?
No.
Musk left California in 2020. I’ll bet you a dollar arrogant California will try some sort of clawback maneuver (if they haven’t already). It won’t work. But they will try, if for no other reason than it will make the CA commies happy.
Now they'll have to reach down to the "lower classes" to fund their pet lefty project:
"Measure ER, also known as the Essential Services Restoration Act, has passed in Los Angeles County.
Tax Increase: It raises the county sales tax by a half-cent, from 9.75% to 10.25%.
It was losing until enough ballots were "found" to pass the measure.
He didn’t just leave, they were attacking him.
Texas, WINNER!
They’ll be Ok, california will just add another 10% to the state income tax on those remaining
No.
Lefties love nothing more than money.
States are famously “laboratories for Democracy”, as some fellow once wrote. I think the stupidity of CA and other states will drive a significant share of economic development to Florida, Texas, and some other select states, while the rest of the country, particularly NY, IL, CA, WA, OR, and CO, will wallow in the consequences of their choices. You can’t stop capital from flowing to where it is most hospitably treated, and you can’t fix the stupid manifest in NY/IL/CA in terms of public employee pension deficits - which will drive those with discretion to vote with their feet. And so it is.
As usual.
They’re recouping much, or all, of the loss through revenue from the AI boom. NVIDIA, Broadcom, Marvell, OpenAI, etc., have generated trillions of new wealth.
There’s still a community of very wealthy people willing to fork over massive taxes/tribute/protection money/high costs for the privilege of living in California. Many of them even have a perverse sense of pride about it. They’re extremely concentrated in the South and East San Francisco Bay Area. Hence the prominence of Kamala Harris, Nancy Pelosi and Gavin Newsome.
Musk and lots of Californians stayed with CA and its super-high taxes, oppression of individual liberties, institutionalized racism/DEI, and corruption...... for many, many years... putting up (and coughing up) with and for it all....
but there IS a break point.
Just try to rent a U-Haul in California for a one-way move to TX or FL (or any of several other free/freer states) and see what happens? It either isn’t available or else there’s a HUGE premium fee (sufficient for the company to hire somebody to drive the unit back to California since there’s no longer any natural patronage-traffic going in that direction).
