One sailor is dead and a second sailor is in pre-trial confinement after an early morning Saturday shooting aboard carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN-79), USNI News has learned.
Boatswain’s Mate Seaman Jesse Braswell of Colorado was killed in the shooting, which happened around 5:15 a.m. on Saturday, a Navy spokesperson told USNI News.

The ship is currently under construction at Newport News. The first sailors reported to the ship in October of 2019.
Wonder why they didn’t name the suspect. Could it be as a funny name?
I was a little confused as to why s ship under construction has sailors aboard but this explains it.
“Kennedy completed builder’s trials in February, USNI News previously reported. The ship is expected to deliver to the Navy in March 2027. Kennedy’s first sailors – a crew of 43 – reported to the ship in October 2019.”

I’m also curious how the killer got a firearm onboard.
But maybe that’s such a rare occurrence that nobody really thinks to check for it.

I’ll bet it wasn’t hard to get it onboard. Worst case, hiding it on a pallet of equipment to be installed, or the easiest case, even just walking on with it. I would find it hard to believe they would search them or walk them through metal detectors in a shipyard.

Hegseth recently changed that to active duty can carry a firearm on base...not sure if that applies to ships though.
Not enough information provided but it may have been a case of "Quarterdeck Quickdraw" by the Petty Officer of the Watch, which would be a good explanation of by the Navy is sitting on it hoping it blows over.

I think Ann Coulter’s rule is most likely the reason there is no mention of the killer:
“The longer it takes news media to identify a shooter, the less likely the suspect is to be a white male.”
When I was assigned to the precom unit of USS Eisenhower I lived near in a house (I was an e+6) I was buying however younger sailors lived in apartments away from the shipyard that the Navy rented. Most were 3 bedroom with 3 sailors living there. Given most of these kids never lived on their own those apartments were a pita for us more senior sailors to manage.
Given that the shooting happened at 5:15 AM (still dark out), you well could be right.
Jesse could easily be a woman.
