The quiet contender: Can Gadi Eisenkot become Israel's leading challenger to Netanyahu?
Jerusalem Post ^ | June 5, 2026 | Keshet Neev

Amid the fast-paced daily changes in the political sphere, one trend has remained consistent: the steady rise in support for Yashar Party leader Gadi Eisenkot across recent polls.

This trend of Eisenkot rising in the polls, and now coming close behind Bennett and Lapid, who trail Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ruling Likud Party, could soon make him the leader of the largest party in the opposition bloc...

Leading a centrist party aiming to oust Netanyahu, Eisenkot presents himself as a unique candidate in the first election since the October 7 Hamas attacks. He appears to have a more reserved personality, unlike the outgoing, loud personas that politicians tend to have...

Eisenkot has said that the loss of his youngest son pushed him to take action to better the country, and in September 2025, he launched Yashar. He spoke about the loss of his son and nephews while marking Remembrance Day in April, reflecting on the impact it had on him.

“You need to gather strength, to look for good reasons to continue living a normal life. I understand that you cannot turn the clock back,” he explained.

That approach has been felt in Eisenkot’s campaign. Though his backstory remains at the forefront of the public’s mind, his plans for the next government are said to aim to move the country forward from the October 7 attacks.

Netanyahu has dominated Israeli politics for years. For a long time, he’s done a great job of leading the country, both domestically and internationally. I’ve been a huge fan of his leadership. But just like another politician I admire, Margaret Thatcher, there comes a time when a dominant politician outwears their welcome and doesn’t know that its time to leave the stage. Its Netanyahu’s time to go gracefully before he is defeated and brings his party down with him. He has lost a step politically and is weighted down with more and more baggage over the years. Its getting to the point where he is a liability. He needs to step aside and allow fresh blood to lead Likud.

interesting to have a new candidate- after all Bennet and Lapid have had a stab at leadership. their goverment collapsed in short order. i wonder if Eisenkot is rising due to pulling from them, or is he pulling from Likud et al?

Gadi Eisenkot had been a Likud member his entire career. He served under Netanyahu as:

1) IDF Chief of Staff (2015–2019)

2) War Cabinet Minister (2023–2024)

He is no Leftist. And neither is Naftali Bennett.

Indeed, Eisenkot appeals to center-right/centrists, but also the hardcore Likud types disenchanted with Netanyahu.

The problem with ex-military dudes leading Israel is they always turn out to be the worst traitors and give up the most land to Arabs. Sharon pulled all Jews and troops out of Gaza, which was not only bad for Israel - and Gazans - but also Christians too. There were 15 churches left from the 68 there once was in Gaza, when Hamas took over in 2005. All but 3 of them had been destroyed just 18 years later. And the withdrawal made Israelis less safe and setup endless attacks and October 7.

Ehud Barak was Israel's most decorated soldier - who helped lead the 1981 attack on Iraq's Osirik nuclear plant. Once in office, however he tried to hand over the entire West Bank and nearly all of Jerusalem to Yasser Arafat. Miraculously, Arafat refused even 99% of his goal, and Israel survived the scumbag Barak. Later of course he was exposed as a VIP member of the Epstein Club.

So even though Bennett and especially Lapid are weak and feckless, I worry a bit more about Eisenkot, who - if he also decides to become a traitor - will do it with the ruthlessness of Sharon, whereas Bennett would likely fold.

Viktor Orban also comes to mind. He had years to groom a replacement, yet utterly failed, dooming his party, and perhaps also (we hope not) his country.

To the contrary. Eisenkot is more hardline than Bibi if anything. Quote from latest interview with Ynet:

“The link that now exists between Iran and Hezbollah — where Beirut is treated the same as Tehran — is something very serious that has never existed before,” he said. “It’s something I never imagined. We failed to capitalize on our military achievements and woke up to a security reality that must not be allowed. Even the fact that Israel needs approval from Washington in order to carry out a strike in Lebanon is inconceivable.”

My problem with you is that Jo matter the subject, you are on the side of dividing any possible conservative coalition.

Every time.

Try harmony and cohesion someday.

If you were an honest conservative, you would occasionally attack leftists.

But you only ever attack fellow conservatives.

If you were an honest conservative, you would take this advice:

Your posts only ever cause harm to conservatism. If you actually value conservatism, I implore you to stop, as you always hurt our electoral chances by sowing division.

But you won’t take that advice, because you are at least hopelessly self-unaware, but more probably a leftist troll on a mission.

Just go away, for the sake of the cause!

This is not a Left vs. Right forum. Just like with a GOP primary, there is plenty of intra-debate and in-party among conservatives alone to be had. And the same applies to other countries.

It’s the raving Leftists who shun debate, vaccinate or else, obey or else. Yet here you and some others are just wanting to terrorize and cancel any and all nuanced viewpoints.

It’d be real rich for you to go around Israel calling everyone criticizing Netanyahu and Anti-Semite or traitor. Especially those who loved ones on October 7th, of which Gadi Eisenkot is one. Yet here you are implying just that!

Netanyahu has dominated Israeli politics for years. For a long time, he’s done a great job of leading the country, both domestically and internationally.

He made some mistakes but we can say the same about Trump.

So if we agree with 80% of what they do (Bibi and Trump), in general, you can't expect more than that.

Bibi is doing what he thinks is in the best interest of Israel and Trump is doing that with USA. It's a rare thing in the Western world nowadays.

Skipping right around the issue:

You only ever cause division, as if it is your mission.

I perceive INTENT.
