Jurors have reached a verdict in the murder trial of Karmelo Anthony, the Texas teenager accused of fatally stabbing fellow student Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet in Frisco last year, as per KTVT.
As attention turns to the outcome of the closely watched case, many are also looking at Anthony's defense team, including attorney Mike Howard, who helped lead the argument that Anthony acted in self-defense.
Mike Howard is a Dallas-Fort Worth-based criminal defense attorney who has spent his career representing people charged with offenses in state and federal court. According to his law firm's website, Howard began his legal career at Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas and later at the Dallas County Public Defender's Office. And he left the public defender's role when his caseload grew too large for him to give each client the attention they deserved.
Howard opened the Law Office of Mike Howard in 2009. He graduated from SMU Dedman School of Law in 2001 and holds a bachelor's degree from Texas Tech University, per his SMU faculty profile.
Howard's strategy in the Anthony trial has focused on poking holes in the prosecution's case. During the trial, his team highlighted inconsistencies in witness testimony, different accounts of whether Metcalf pushed Anthony with one hand or two, whether Metcalf was alone or joined by others, and how much of the altercation various witnesses actually saw, as per NBC News.
What is the case he is defending Anthony, 19, is charged with murder in the April 2025 stabbing death of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco in Texas. The confrontation began after a dispute over Anthony's presence under the Memorial High School team tent during a rainy meet.

The 35 year sentence was a good result though. Might have been less than what a judge would have sentenced if Karmelo pled guilty. In Texas, there is only capital murder, which this didn't qualify as and murder. They probably wouldn't have accepted a plea to manslaughter.
I’m surprised the defense didn’t work this angle:
“Metcalf’s death was the result of a dispute that escalated between the two rival secondary schools, according to police reports.”

They should have spent the gofraudme $$ on a legal defense rather than a new house.
The 35 year sentence was a good result though“
Like hell it was. This punk can walk out at when is 35 years old. He could have gotten up to 99. He should gotten 50 years at least.
I don’t see the point in going to trial when no one would say it was self defense and the defendant didn’t testify. I guess they could hope someone wouldn’t want to convict him despite the facts. Also, the alternative was maybe pleading guilty to murder and have the judge sentence him.
I mean 35 years was a good result for the defense lawyer.
Ahh yes in that case you are correct.
There were no black jurors because all the potential black jurors said they could not find a brother guilty.
Now it’s teed up for a Lefty judge to void the conviction because Trayvon... I mean Caramelo... didn’t have a jury of his homeys.
Well, that's an..... interesting choice of words considering his client's stabby treatment of others.
A Marx bro?
He works for the firm of Howard, Howard and Fine?
Apparently Karmelo refused any plea deal so it went to trial.
The defense had very little to work with.
He was under the age of 18 when he committed the crime, so they couldn’t pursue capital murder.
CC
They better hurry before he gets put in general. Oops, not fast enough.
He was hoping for an OJ type juror to hang itv
I don’t think he had much to work with. Not one character witness was called on behalf of Karmelo. That says a lot. It sounds like this kid was trouble before the stabbing.
His parents left the court before the sentencing was announced leaving their own child to face it alone. Then the video of the parents leaving the parking lot showed them all smiles throwing signs to the black protesters. Not a tear in sight.
He did in this case
Nyuk. Nyuk

“During the trial, his team highlighted inconsistencies in witness testimony,....”
There actually were very few inconsistencies (as in none) in witness testimony. Now it is true that some testimony was inconsistent with what the Anthony supporters were saying publicly but that was because they were lying.
But I think he is a Junior Partner at Dewey Cheatham & Howe.
