A former Royal Navy commander has expressed concerns over reports Sir Keir Starmer could axe a new fleet of warships. Tom Sharpe, who commanded four warships during his 27-year career, said he fears ministers will take the “cheapest option” rather than the best one in the future of the Type 83 destroyer programme.
Reports claim the Prime Minister is weighing up scrapping plans to build the warships, expected to replace the current Type 45s next decade. Mr Sharpe said there is a decision to be made about the programme, as the First Sea Lord pushes for a transition towards a “hybrid navy” comprising traditional crewed ships and drones. Mr Sharpe told the Express he was “55-45” in favour of pursuing the ships, which could cost £2 billion per vessel.
He said ideally the Navy needs a drone to carry out the duties the advanced radar on the Type 83 is expected to do, but that by having a ship, commanders are “in charge of their own destiny”.
“The fewer moving parts the better,” Mr Sharpe said. He added: “We will choose the cheapest option, not the best one, guaranteed.”
The Type 83s could be one of the victims of the much-delayed Defence Investment Plan (DIP), it has been reported.

He does what the City of London bankers tell him to do.
If they don’t have any money to pay for them, they really can’t do anything else.
The left, despite its protestations, has never been interested in keeping a strong military.
A corrupt and disintegrating nation doesn’t need a Royal Navy anymore.
If Starmer had his way, he’d probably completely disarm the UK so as to leave the country defenseless against a Muslim conquest. He’s already allowing in rafts full of them.
YouTube historian Mark Felton says the Royal Navy now has more admirals than active warships.
Perhaps Starmer is now trying for two or more admirals per active warship.
That’s a good thing. We are not going to want a nuclear armed “United Caliphate”.
Gotta have money to pay for the degenerate low IQ types being imported.
the stinking politicians have destroyed the Royal Navy
Leftist destruction.
In the era of the silicon chip, pinpoint guidance and stealth, naval surface combatants are obsolete. Better off with geeks in a hidden bunker, drones and missiles. As the US is learning on the shores of the Persian Gulf, it is not easy to project power far from home.
Keir Starmer are the sort of “leaders” (if you want to call them that) which lead powerful and great societies into their decline.
The UK deserves better than him.
Since they already opened their borders to invasion, it seems a waste to worry about it now.
Needs the money for the Leeches
I suppose Britannia no longer rules the waves.
Yet Britain wants to have its opinion taken seriously on international issues. You have to pay to play, Keir. And Britain isn’t paying anymore. So kindly shut up about Ukraine, Iran and most other international issues.
Money could be taken from welfare, immigrants and NGOs. But it won’t be. And Britain can’t crew the ships it still has. So the actual loss in deployable warships is probably zero.
$2 billion “naval surface combatants are obsolete”
Sometimes force has to be applied at a place across an ocean.
Vessel speed has to lose priority to resilience to battle damage.
Vessels should be no larger than necessary to be able to get across an ocean safely and reliably.
I won’t say more for national security reasons.
Someday, when we have a weak Democrat President, Russia will Nuke the US, and Europe will just surrender to them.
