The Royal Navy's entire available fleet of hunter-killer submarines is stuck in port unable to sail – leaving Britain at risk from Vladimir Putin's Russia.
In a fresh humiliation for Britain's Armed Forces, all five of its Astute class submarines are currently laid up awaiting maintenance and other repair work.
Military experts have also warned that the Navy's lack of available nuclear-powered attack submarines – which carry up to 38 Spearfish torpedoes and a battery of Tomahawk missiles – leaves the UK's sub-sea internet and power cables dangerously vulnerable to sabotage by the Kremlin.
The subs also play a critical role in protecting the larger Vanguard submarines, which carry the Trident ballistic missiles that make up the UK's nuclear deterrent.
The extraordinary revelations come just a day after the Mail told how one of Britain's flagship £3.5billion aircraft carriers had broken down again and was forced into port in Norway for repairs.
And on Friday the head of the UK's military warned that the threats faced by Britain are greater than at any time since the Cold War.
In stark comments, Sir Richard Knighton, Chief of the Defence Staff, said Russia has been 'probing, challenging, testing our defences' and is 'raising the stakes and risks crossing a line'.
He told the BBC: 'I'm very clear that this is the most dangerous time I have known in my working life. The risks and threats to this country are greater than I have known since the Cold War.'
Lord West, former First Sea Lord and Labour security minister, last night said it was 'unacceptable' and 'very worrying' that Astute subs are out of action.
'The attack submarines are fundamental for looking after our ballistic missile submarines,' he added.
'They are fundamental for frightening and terrifying the Russians.

Anyone else wondering if the UK’s Deep State has been cooking its defense books for decades...?
And I’ll bet it’s not the only member of NATO doing so.
That was then, now it’s the “Don’t Hurt Me Song.” Or Kumbaya.
They might as well just give up on having a navy. They are literally being invaded by sea and can’t/won’t use it to defend their country. They literally have more admirals than ships in commission. It is the most expensive kind of navy in the world - a second-rate-or-worse one.
In this case, no. They openly cut funds to it for welfare and turned their armed forces, especially the navy, into a social experiment, and routed funds to those programs instead of into warfighting. Then they cut more money.
Parliament, especially under Labour, is absolutely notorious for endless cutting of defense budgets.
The naval shipyard workers only work one shift. They’re not gonna get a lot done working like that.
The UK hasn’t cut funds for welfare.
https://finance.yahoo.com/economy/policy/articles/uk-now-spends-more-welfare-100500779.html
And it’s been allowing its military to deteriorate for decades.
Per AI...
“Over the past forty years, the UK’s military spending as a percentage of GDP has steadily declined from roughly 4.1% in the mid-1980s to a historical low of around 1.8% between 2016 and 2019, before rising moderately to 2.3% in 2024–2025”
It’s that blip in 24/25 that I’m calling BS on in particular.
I wonder where that so-called increase really went.
So the UK subs are in the same as those who would man them.
Brittain has nothing to fear from Russia. Argentina, now...
This isn’t really a bad thing at this point. Do we really want the jihadis of the United Kaliphate to be armed with subs?
Those subs built by Lucas Electrics?
No, they cut defense funds to give them to welfare.
The blip in 24/25 was replacing weapons they gave to Ukraine plus the belated and rushed purchase of Challenger III tanks/tank upgrades plus some limited related upgrades. Other things they did - bought an entire chip fab plant because they realized that they didn’t have a good source for secure chips (and we don’t either), *finally* paid Rolls Royce to repair and maintain their drydocked submarine fleet for the next 8 years (they are going to have to build new nuclear reactors and long lead items for those things), belatedly gave Qinetiq a bunch of money to belatedly re-fund their share of a tri-national development of a 6th gen fighter, spent a bunch of money to belatedly fix and repair the L111A1 machine gun fleet, and belatedly spent 4.1 billion pounds sterling on getting actual hearing protection comm headsets going.
Lucas Electrics died a long time ago, the corpse was bought by TRW. TRW spun them off with their automotive division a while back and the brand is dead.
BAE aka the old British Aerospace made the prior and incoming classes of ballistic subs as well as their attack boats. The reactors are supplied by Rolls Royce Submarines.
....Lucas, the Prince of Darkness....!!
....Lucas, the Prince of Darkness....!!
Just recently read that pacifist Norway has,in the last few years, hugely increased their military capabilities and have completely closed the land border they have with Russia. China,North Korea,Russia and Iran are the most dangerous countries on earth...by far.
India has a decent navy. When they complete the occupation of Britain and annex it, the problem will be solved. Just give them a few more years of the current power structure to formalize the situation.
“And I’ll bet it’s not the only member of NATO doing so.”
Ha ha, and Ukraine thinks these pansies are going to protect them.
But at least they still have Rum, Sodomy and The Lash.
