'Essential More Men Stay and Fight': EU Could Limit Asylum for Ukrainians

The European Union could reduce the refugee status protections it grants to military age Ukrainian men because “the war needs to be fought and won”, and should crack down on Russians coming to the bloc for luxury shopping trips and beach holidays, ministers were told.

A European Union Justice and Home Affairs summit in Luxembourg has discussed the need to reform the bloc’s open borders approach to the Ukraine War, with crackdowns on both Ukrainians and Russians proposed. While preventing Russians from enjoying their summer holidays in Europe is already widespread, a further proposal came from the Swedish government, with their representative migration minister Johan Forssell calling on the bloc to stop being a hideout for young Ukrainian men who don’t want to fight.

Reuters reports Forssell’s strident comments on fighting age men, quoting him as having said: “It is essential for us to provide Ukrainians with protection, but at the same time the war needs to be fought and won. For that to happen, it is essential that more men stay in Ukraine and fight”. The proposed change would apply to new arrivals from Ukraine in the future, not those already in the bloc, it was stated.

As things stand, Ukrainians benefit from a generous “temporary protection directive” which grants them residency, work, and welfare rights in the European Union, well ahead of most refugees on the continent. This was enacted in part as an act of solidarity with the European Union’s eastern neighbour after it was invaded in 2022, but also on the understanding that most Ukrainians could be productive temporary members of society and would then want to go home and rebuild after the war ended.

A lot of fighting-age Ukrainian men sitting it out in Poland.

Give ‘em a rifle and send ‘em back.

How many sissy Ukrainian “men” are claiming “refugee status?” These are terrible people who forced others to win it, for them.

Ukraine was already crazy for not letting people under 27 fight.

Ukraine has always done a great job of making sure it doesn’t win.

Smart. Because they are trying to recover demographically after the war.

The problem is that they are depleted when it comes to manpower and Putin is not willing to negotiate.

Zelensky should have made that deal last year when Trump was offering his assistance to end the war.

Putin seems fine in fighting the war for another decade. This is an existential war for both Ukraine and Russia so in the long run, Russia is going to win.

Those that left are never returning...demographics show there are now simply not enough Ukie males to rebuild. Construction workers, plumbers, electricians, masons, carpenters,roofers,etc....they are a dead dying nation with no future, no matter how much money they steal.

No, that is a lame excuse.

Did the US come back after each of its wars, including the Civil War?

Americans were drafted.

Your position has no merit.

A group of member states has meanwhile demanded the EU make it harder for Russians to holiday in Europe. The issue was raised in a letter by Poland, Norway, the Baltic states and another nine members of the free-movement Schengen area at the Luxembourg meeting on Thursday. Despite wartime restrictions, more than 470,000 tourist Schengen visas were issued to Russian citizens in 2025, many multi-entry, according to the letter.

“I want there to be no more shopping weekends. I want there to be no more fancy trips to Europe while Ukrainians are dying on the battlefield,” said Sweden’s Forssell. “This situation is completely insane and it needs to be stopped.” According to Agence France-Presse, member states wrote: “It has been deeply troubling to witness increasing numbers of Russian tourists enjoying leisure travel on European beaches and in European resorts while missiles and drones continue to strike civilians and civilian infrastructure in Ukraine.”

LOL, funny how you refuse to mention any details of this "deal". Putin demanded Ukraine, disarm, surrender territory its currently holding, forsake any alliances, etc. Some "deal".

There was a report around a month ago that various EU nations had agreed on a plan to round up and send around 300K male Ukrainian refugees back to be conscripted. This is in violation of various treaties and whatnot regarding treatment of refugees, but if push comes to shove I doubt the legal protections will hold.

Ukraine population at the start of the war was similar to ours in 1865 or so and we were getting non-stop mass immigration, which isn’t available to Ukraine, the comparisons don’t work.

You know that an unknown number of those “Ukrainian” refugees are ethnically Russian or at least speak Russian as their first language and prefer not to be forced to kill their fellow Russian speakers. Just sayin’.
