‘DOGE’ wanted to declare 2.7 million people ‘dead’ at Social Security: whistleblower

The Trump administration planned to place 2.7 million living people in a so-called death file that would have cut off their ability to work, receive benefits or use banking services as part of an immigration-enforcement push, a former Social Security executive said in a whistleblower lawsuit.

Jeremiah Schofield, who worked at Social Security for 25 years before leaving the agency in October, refused to help with the plan after government lawyers warned that falsely marking living people as dead could violate federal law.

The latest whistleblower lawsuit comes after the Trump administration entity known as the Department of Government Efficiency embedded itself in the Social Security Administration last year. “DOGE,” as Elon Musk dubbed the entity, has come under fire from two other whistleblowers for mishandling data and compromising the Social Security numbers of every American.

The Department of Homeland Security initially asked the Social Security Administration to mark about 6,000 living people as dead, and those people were added to the death file, according to the latest complaint. They were later removed from that database, the complaint said.

Then in April 2025, DHS transmitted to SSA a second list of 2.7 million individuals to be marked as dead, the whistleblower said.

Schofield expressed concern that the plan was part of an effort to “deport immigrants, regardless of whether they were suspected terrorists or convicted violent criminals,” according to the complaint.

When asked why DHS wanted the 2.7 million people to be marked as dead, a DOGE worker said “either the lives of these individuals would be ruined … and they would be driven to ‘self-deport’” or “they would have to go to a local Social Security office, at which point SSA staff would send them to DHS offices,” where officials would “detain them for deportation,” according to the complaint.

The title of the article is kind of outrageous. When I saw it I thought they were just randomly picking people out to end their benefits.

Schofield expressed concern that the plan was part of an effort to “deport immigrants, regardless of whether they were suspected terrorists or convicted violent criminals,” according to the complaint.

Apparently this "whistleblower" thinks it's illegal to deport anyone unless they are terrorists or convicted violent criminals. Or he thinks something is supposed to stop just because he doesn't like it. The fact that the formal "complaint" (as this article calls it) includes that is remarkable in itself. It refers to it as a "concern" of his. Whistleblower reports are not about someone's concerns afaik.

I have a strong feeling that this lunatic's allegations aren't 100% accurate. I will be interested in hearing the response from the Trump administration.

The Democrats have seceded from the human race. It’s time for Trump to go full Pinochet.

No surprise to the misleading tenor in the article. MarketWatch leans left more often than NASCAR drivers at Bristol. (Note: all turns at almost all tracks are left turns)

The entire US Treasury is just a money laundering slush fund that pays high commissions to those involved, using social welfare programs designed for just that purpose.

NFP'S in Memphis funded by government grants exceed 15,000. More than twice the number of real businesses. Check the next post link for state published numbers.

I think that article is a lie. And i also thought you didn’t have to commit other crimes besides coming across the border illegally to be sent back. And the title of the article stinks, too...

Sounds like a great plan, in my humble opinion.

Well, just like any government program that doles out money, you know there are going to be some abuses. As I recall, DOGE found many active social security accounts for people that were well over 100 years old and the numbers were statistically impossible.

Marketwatch - Far left wing site that answers dumb questions like:

“We have a net worth of $10M and a monthly income of $20,000. How will we ever be able to afford to retire?”
