This prom season, some of the biggest celebrations across the country are taking place before the official dance even begins. In the Philadelphia area, some parents say they are spending thousands for this special moment.
Prom send-offs -- when friends and family members gather to celebrate high school students before they leave for prom -- are now events of their own.
Wanda Matos, who organized an elaborate send-off for her daughter Madison Matos in Philadelphia this year, also said she views prom send-offs as celebrations of hard work

People are idiots.
At the rate money is losing its value, maybe spending it today for a lifelong memory makes sense.
What is the accomplishment? That she can go to prom? Things may have changed since I went to prom, but the only criteria to go were that you weren't suspended and you weren't pregnant, and I think the pregnant qualification even had been lifted.
Makes sense. These younger folks aren’t getting married so they might as well celebrate their last “dress up” formal event.
People of color sure do celebrate the wrong things.
I finished high school in 1989 and it is interesting to look at photos of proms that took place about a decade or so earlier and a lot of people then simply dressed up in their best suits (men) and dresses (women) to the dinner and dance. By my time, it was tuxedos, limousines, hotel rooms, and other things to blow obscene amounts of money on and it seems to be staying that way.

I didn’t go to the prom and my parents didn’t give me $12k in cash either.
Our biggest senior prom accomplishment was sneaking beer in ……
That happens AT the Prom.
Well, not “hard” or “work” because social promotion is the pathway to success amongst the sickelcell enthusiast community, but it’s an accomplishment in it’s own right to sit in place, staring blankly without a thought in your head or a dream in one’s heart avoiding the impulse to random violence.
When you only get one chance to celebrate an accomplishment, renting out a private plane to pose in front of isn’t that excessive. Especially when it’s a lead pipe cinch the graduation will be disrupted by widespread brawling, tear gas and bear spray.

Twelve Thousand Dollars on a Prom dress? I’m guessing this is a single Mom, trying to make up for raising a child w/o a father. $12K may put undue pressure on the teenager about the entire event, blow it way up in significance, so that it’s barely even fun.
Stupid people....sheesh
Parents do that for themselves.
I do not get this.
