Israel needs to end double standards against IDF troops who commit suicide
Jerusalem Post ^ | May 28, 2026 | Editorial

The story of Alex Miller has many tragic antecedents...Miller, 23, an American who had served in the IDF, died of an apparent suicide in Miami, where he had been living since being discharged from the army...

“We had a lot of conversations about the [2022] attack, but apparently, the attack and Noam’s death broke him. Even though he didn’t admit it, he suffered a lot,” he [father, Danny Miller] told Israel National News...

The circumstances surrounding Miller’s heartbreaking death came a day after the High Court of Justice heard a petition challenging the state’s handling of discharged soldiers and reservists who died by suicide...

At the heart of the case is a painful legal and moral gap:

When a soldier is killed while in active service, the path to military burial and recognition as a fallen soldier is clear. But when a soldier or reservist returns from war, is discharged or no longer under an active call-up order, and later dies by suicide, allegedly because of trauma from that service, the state says the legal answer is not the same.

The justices made clear during the hearing that they did not dispute the basic premise that mental injury from military service can be just as severe as physical injury.

So many soldiers have emerged from the battlefields of the last two and a half years not only with physical injuries, but like Alex Miller, with severe psychological wounds.

After giving so much of themselves to the country they were defending, these soldiers – whether still active, whether still living in Israel or not – deserve the same status and honor from the IDF and from Israel that are afforded to any soldier who is killed in battle.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

Follow-up to article about Alex Miller (age 23) from yesterday.

Too many discussions surrounding the wars of the day center on the politicians and pundits, instead of the YOUNG men and women actually fighting them—many left with physical and psychological wounds for the rest of their lives, long forgotten by those in power who sent them in the first place.

Ir’s tragic, alright, but, as a consolation, once Israel figures out a way to get US taxpayer billions to pay for these incidences.....perhaps connecting them to the Holocaust..... they’ll be forever revered in Israeli history.

“”In June last year, one of Miller’s close friends, Noam Shemesh, was killed by anti-tank fire in Gaza, an incident that greatly affected him, according to Danny.””

Without this in the excerpt, we don’t know who Noam was...

Your speculation alone is enough to indict Jews.

Nice.

Why on earth are Americans permitted to fight for a foreign country and then come back??? Their US citizenship should be revoked immediately upon enlistment. US, or Israel? PICK ONE.

the Israeli rate is lower than ours despite being almost constantly at war- they fight the problem more aggressively and for them the wars are existential, for the security of their families, their homeland. this case involves a “lone soldier,” not a sabra, so most likely a different view of service. if there is an inequity in policy i am sure it will be addressed. and remember - there just about everyone does national service, so leaders have been in uniform for a number of years, directly and in the reserves - a major difference from here in U.S. i think the Israeli attitude towards honoring service, getting their prisoners back was shown well recently as the whole nation took up their cause. another big difference from here in U S. if you spend time there, you are struck by how the army culture bonds people- and drives ppolicy...

You approach the undermining of Israel while assisting the Muslim side, in many ways and from many angles with the topics you post.

The answer to Jewish military suicides is the same for Christian military suicides, they need to be taught more about their work and how it is treated in the bible, what it’s actual place is in a nation rather than the simple secular image that (and one that you share) what they are enduring and doing is evil rather than good, it is brutal and heart breaking, but important and righteous from the bible.
They need to know that God doesn’t condemn them and that he recognizes their pain, and that he doesn’t allow for them to take their own lives, especially for personal weakness of misguided guilt.

Serving as a commissioned or non-commissioned officer in a foreign country’s
military is a recognized act of potential expatriation. —— Baker Donelson

Loss is not automatic; it requires a formal administrative determination
and issuance of a Certificate of Loss of Nationality.———— U.S Dept of State

While many Americans can join foreign militarys (such as the Israeli
Defense Forces) without losing status, doing so can create legal complexities.

They may also be subject to prosecution for offenses against US law, such as “treason”
or violations of the Neutrality Act, depending on the circumstances. -— U.S. Dept of State

“””””Why on earth are Americans permitted to fight for a foreign country and then come back???”””””

We did it under Reagan when it was greatly encouraged and we did it in WWI and WWII, fighting for the right side that our nation supports in a war or conflict is noble.

Remember the Lafayette Escadrille or the Flying Tigers?
This article is about the World War I French Air Force unit of American pilots.

The First American Volunteer Group of the Republic of China Air Force, nicknamed the Flying Tigers, was formed to help oppose the Japanese invasion of China.

It depends on if you are helping the good guys or the bad guys, during the 80s an officer or enlisted could join Reagan’s military and could still get a security clearance after having been a mercenary which is wilder than serving as a regular in a foreign military.

I’ll just bet that when you self-righteously tap out “anti Semites
and anti-Zionists,” on a scale of 10, your self-esteem jumps to 2.

I read a report that civilian Israeli women are experiencing menstrual cycle irregularities en masse due to all the collective stress. With thousands experiencing skipped periods for months. (While military women opt for birth control and hormonal suppressors during deployment.)

Anyway, it’s ultimately the loved ones of fallen soldiers who are left to pick up the pieces whether in Israel, the U.S. or anywhere in the world. God has compassion for those caught in the crosshairs of every side of conflict.

While most of the US is war-weary, some of the Neocon contingent exhibit signs of the same sickness that swept Europe prior to the First World War — and dominoed into all the catastrophes thereafter.

Largely baby boomers and older, who associate anti-war sentiments with counterculture, who remain inculcated in Cold War programming, and frustrated with their place in the world without a conflict to keep them stimulated.
