A conservative admirer of U.S. President Donald Trump will go head-to-head in a run-off election that will decide Colombia’s next president later this month.
Abelardo de la Espriella, a tough-talking lawyer and businessman, took the lead in Colombia’s presidential election on Sunday night, with about 43.7% of the total votes according to results released by the national civil registry, while Iván Cepeda, a seasoned politician from the Pacto Histórico party led by incumbent President Gustavo Petro, followed with 40.9%.
Petro, however, has cast doubt on the results of the first round of voting, alleging in a social media post that the preliminary vote-counting software added 800,000 voters who do not exist. Petro said that the only results that he would “heed and accept” are those that come out of the official scrutiny process—a dayslong process wherein Colombian commissions of judges, notaries, and other delegates review election records.
The elections are expected to be a referendum on Petro, Colombia’s first leftist President, as progressive leaders in Latin America increasingly face pressure—not only from their respective constituents, but also from the Trump Administration—to focus more on curbing gang violence and ramping up domestic security.
Who is Abelardo de la Espriella?
De la Espriella, positions himself as an anti-establishment conservative.
He has publicly spoken in favor of the Administrations of Donald Trump in the U.S., Nayib Bukele in El Salvador, and Javier Milei in Argentina. Milei congratulated de la Espriella on social media for his first-round victory, adding that if the second round yields the same results, Colombia will “rejoin the concert of Free Nations.”
De la Espriella rejects gender ideology and has been previously slammed for actions deemed homophobic. On abortion, de la Espriella said he was “pro-life”. On firearms, he has expressed support for the legalization of civilians carrying them.

De la Espriella campaigns on drastically shrinking the government, cutting taxes, and eliminating entire ministries to achieve laissez-faire economic growth.
Abelardo de la Espriella identifies as a devout Roman Catholic. De la Espriella frequently frames his campaign as a spiritual crusade rather than a secular political battle. He heavily emphasizes "God," "family values," and traditional conservative principles to rally religious voters.
Total Opposition to Abortion: His platform is strictly anti-abortion. He pledges to roll back or severely restrict Colombia’s current legal frameworks regarding reproductive rights, framing the issue as the defense of sacred life
Rejection of Progressive Gender Politics: He actively campaigns against feminism, LGBTQ+ inclusive state mandates, and what he labels "gender ideology". He argues that these concepts seek to dismantle the traditional, God-ordained family
But I thought this was being an election denier.
I saw one source (AP?) with a lede that referred to “far-right hardliner Anelardo de la Espriella vs peace-maker Ivan Cepada.” Cepada was a member of Patriotic Union, the successor to FARC, the narco-terrorist, Communist party. Note that he’s named, “Ivan,” not an unheard of name among Hispanics: consider the baseball player hall-of-famer turned Puerto Rican congressional delegate, Ivan Rodriguez. But the usual analog of “John” among Hispanics is Juan, whereas “Ivan” only took off after the Communists.
Yeah, it’s funny that he’s an election denier before the election even has taken place, and while his allies and his mentor run the election process.
Total Opposition to Abortion:“
Beware the women vote. Legions of selfish single issue women will turn out to put a radical communist into office as long as he promises to let them kill their babies.
Petro is highly unpopular in Colombia.
If the election is at least partially free, De la Espriella should be show in in the second round.
But I worry that Pedro will try to get his man elected by some way!
