Rep. Frederica Wilson, an 83-year-old Florida Democrat, won’t seek re-election

Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Fla., a former teacher and principal known in Congress for her colorful outfits and matching hats, said Friday she will not seek re-election this fall.

“This has been a journey, but it’s time. It’s time. And I know all of you are wondering, ‘What is the congresswoman going to do?’ Well, the congresswoman is going to not seek another term,” Wilson said at a ceremony where a street in the Miami area was named in her honor. The street is next to a school that is also named after her.

“Even leather wears out,” she said, adding that she would not retire but instead travel the country to promote her 5000 Role Models program aimed at helping boys and young men of color.

She had first announced her plans in an interview with the Miami Herald that published on Friday.

Wilson is the 60th House lawmaker this cycle to announce they are either retiring from Congress or running for higher office.

At 83, Wilson had been part of a cadre of senior lawmakers in their 80s and 90s who had said they were running for another term in 2026 — defying voters who are clamoring for generational change among the nation’s leaders.

Heading for the House exits

This election cycle has seen more more House members choose to retire or run for another office than all but one since 1930 — a span of nearly 100 years.

What will she seek? Where she left her glasses? The same place you left your car keys, b*tch. On your head.

Finally a dinosaur that recognizes its own limits, which were probably reached years ago, but the message had to be hammered home probably pretty forcefully.

Otherwise you get carried out feet first or dead.

Redistricting brings new faces to Congress. That’s good.

AI....

Frederica Wilson has recently been absent from House votes for weeks, with reports saying she missed 43 consecutive votes from April 17 to May 14, 2026, while recovering from eye surgery and staying in South Florida. Her office also said her absence was scheduled and that she continued working in the district during recovery.

Reports are that Mad Maxine Waters is also MIA. She is older than dirt. 87 years old.

She also needs to retire and go away.

This has zilch to do with redistricting, unless you assume she’s terrified that a Republican may win her D+23 district, LOL.

What MIGHT happen before the filing deadline is that Debbie Brillo-Head Wasserman-Schultz might jump districts again and flee to this Negro district (CD-24) rather than the one she has currently fled to (CD-20) because CD-20 already — sort of — has another incumbent Democrat running.

“Even leather wears out,”...

And there's chafing with the undies. Someone told me that.

“”the congresswoman is going to not””

She may consider taking English lessons when she’s free of Congress.

No one should be allowed to run again once they hit 80. It’s ludicrous.

83? She should have been put out to pasture ten years ago.
