Real military know hard noses may suck but they get respect as long as they are competent.

If the general actually did write this, it undermines his reputation as being able to distinguish right from wrong - and having the courage to proclaim the difference.

July 1975 General Hank “Gunfighter” Emerson took command of the XVII Airborne Corps and the 82nd Airborne. I think it two weeks to convert a full floor of Womack Hospital to a cardiac ward and fill it up. Every soldier, no exceptions, had to fall out for a 5 mile run every morning. Nam was over and there was no fighting anywhere but Emerson was going to have the 82nd ready before they were needed.
