Trump's scorched-earth MAGA takedown jolts Republicans who fear November bloodbath: 'Rome is burning'

Donald Trump has officially sunk 'disloyal' Texas Senator John Cornyn, but his high-stakes gambit to oust a veteran Republican will almost certainly cost the party.

Top Republicans think the Texas tab could top $200 million.

The worst-case cost for the GOP?

The prized red state Senate seat falling into Democratic hands in six months.

Cornyn's resounding double-digit defeat to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in Tuesday evening's runoff demonstrates Trump's enduring stranglehold on the GOP.

But his decision to punish a well-funded incumbent and instead throw his weight behind a scandal-plagued nominee now presents fresh problems for the party.

The race could cost the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) an additional $250 million, GOP strategist David Urban told CNN recently.

'Our majority is melting down before our eyes,' an anonymous Republican Senator lamented to Punchbowl News last week.

Paxton is seen as more controversial than the institutionally reliable Cornyn, and as a non-incumbent, questions remain about how he will fare.

Democratic nominee James Talarico will be well-funded, but must prove Texas has an appetite for a liberal newcomer.

Some Republicans believe Trump has taken his eye off the ball, mired as he is in a war with Iran while the economy flags.

The latest Daily Mail/JL Partners poll found Trump's approval rating at just 43 percent, with nearly six in ten disapproving of the economy.

'For Trump, this is shaping up as a political Rome is burning moment. He's taken his eye off the ball,' Dennis Lennox, a Michigan-based Republican commentator and public affairs consultant, told the Daily Mail.

'He's building a beautiful arch and a much-needed ballroom while his own voters are dealing with $5 gasoline, economic anxiety and deep uncertainty about where the economy is headed.'

The only ones that need to be worried are the fake Republicans.

Note to Daily Mail: It wasn’t a “Trump takedown.”
It was US - the fed up voters!

Jolts RINOs you mean.

The claim that the base won’t show up for real conservatives or that Leftists will somehow be more motivated to vote against actual conservatives more than RINOs is ridiculous. Leftists were already convinced even the RINOs were Nazis.

The pundits have started the “disloyalty” pejorative now; that is the only reason that Trump did not endorse such a fine statesman. The fact that he was anti-MAGA had nothing to do with his drubbing, according to them.

Absurd.

This has been the refrain by RINOS since the start.

“Trump is unelectable.”

“Cruz is unelectable”

“Paxton is unelectable”

They’ve been saying this forever. It’s like the race card. It doesn’t work anymore.

“Top Republicans think the Texas tab could top $200 million.

But spending in the area of one hundred million dollars so Cornyn (the supposed voters choice) can lose the primary by 30% is acceptable.

The NRSC could save a bundle by NOT backing losers.
Na that would make too much sense.

The GOP in the Senate needs to oust Thune. The time of the RINO is over. The people who will be elected in the future will either be MAGA or they will be Democrats.

I predict after the midterms, Rick Scott will be the GOP Senate Leader.

The party will be in good shape once the last of the Bushies is tossed on his ass. The Bushes replaced the Rockefeller Republicans. Both kinds sucked.

I assume the worry concerns independent voters, not hardcore left or right.

He’s just giving him an opportunity to join the party that they vote with.

Follow your Heart, little RINO.

It was Thune’s hissy fit, that turned it into a massacre.
