South Carolina Senate rejects President Trump’s call to redraw congressional maps

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — President Donald Trump’s push to reshape congressional districts ahead of the November elections suffered a double setback Tuesday, as South Carolina senators declined to do so and a federal court blocked a Republican-backed map in Alabama.

As early in-person voting began Tuesday in South Carolina’s primaries, the state Senate rejected a Republican plan to cancel those congressional votes and instead schedule a new primary under revised districts designed to help the GOP oust a longtime Democrat.

Some senators said it was simply too late to make a change.

“South Carolina citizens are going to the polls today. And neither my conscience or common sense is going to let me stop an election that is already underway,” Republican state Sen. Richard Cash said.

The political drama in South Carolina is part of a Republican strategy — propelled by Trump — to redraw voting districts to the GOP’s advantage in an attempt to hold on to a slim House majority in the midterm elections. Republicans have been moving quickly to try to leverage a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that weakened minority protections under the federal Voting Rights Act.

In Alabama, a three-judge federal panel issued a preliminary injunction blocking the state from using a Republican-drawn congressional map that could help the GOP win an additional seat. The court said the plan “intentionally discriminated based on race” by including only one Black-majority district and it ordered the continued use of a court-imposed map that includes two districts with a significant proportion of Black residents.

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall, a Republican, vowed a quick appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court and predicted an eventual victory.

Democrats, who have suffered their own share of setbacks in the national redistricting battle, praised the turn of events in Alabama.

Looks like racist democrats are able to keep their racist districts.

I have no problem with this. Early voting started today. They were too, little too late.

Trying to do this in Alabama & other states for 2026 if primaries are close or in progress is STUPID politics.

So in your opinion, it is better politics to loose control of the House for 2 years? Please explain how?

The Alabama one is the decision that most bothers me. That Judge spent umpteen million pages basically writing a Dissent to the Supreme Court decision and then proceeded to tell them that his dissent is not the rule of law.

Talking to a SC state rep this weekend and she stated that the senators are getting a lot of pressure from Trump. I asked if she meant via the media and she said no personal calls from Trump. It’s gotta take a pair to get a call from the prez and blow him off.

In order to consume that one Democrat district, the Republicans would have to jeopardize several safe districts. Not worth it. I can see why anyone would presume the SC GOP did this because of rats but it’s still good news.

Would redrawing the map put safe districts in jeopardy?

What the H—l. Last week they said it had passed. But I guess it requires three votes and passed two but not the last one. Spineless.

And it was the Supreme Court Dissenters who stonewalled their dissenting opinion with the intention for this very thing. They conferenced over 7 months ago and would not give their written dissent until they felt the window closed for the 2026 election. The Court Jester Jackson in her laughable dissenting opinion knew what she and her cohorts were doing by slow walking their dissents. They politicized the court through their actions.

A moot point now but the new districts would be rated as:

CD-1: R+7
CD-2: R+7
CD-3: R+13
CD-4: R+11
CD-5: R+10
CD-6: R+5
CD-7: R+9

Here are the current ratings:

CD-1: R+6
CD-2: R+7
CD-3: R+20
CD-4; R+11
CD-5: R+10
CD-6: D+15
CD-7: R+13

“Just like in Indiana.”

Yes. With one major difference.

The cowards in the SC state Senate are perfectly safe for now. There are no elections this year.

So we will have to wait until 2028 to see justice done. And by then they probably will pass some new map, because there WILL be ramifications if they don’t.

The rat SC Justices slow walked their dissent as long as possible and this is why. It is deliberate election manipulation. Rat Judges are political weapons nothing more.
