The chief of police in New Chicago, Indiana, stood accused Sunday of selling a pawn shop a gun that was being held as evidence and then trying to have it bought back, among other allegations.
New Chicago police Chief Earl Mayo was charged with theft, official misconduct, and attempted obstruction of justice, as well as unlawful possession of an anabolic steroid, according to court documents.
Chief Mayo was booked Sunday as an inmate in Clark County, Ohio, after authorities said he tried to evade arrest.
Court documents said this past Thursday, a Lake County, Indiana, sheriff's police commander received a firearm trace request for a gun associated with an upcoming criminal trial.
It turned out the gun, a Taurus G3, had been sold to a pawn shop in Hobart, Indiana, which a Lake County sheriff's detective said was unusual as the gun was being held as evidence in a criminal investigation, court documents said.
Authorities later determined that it was Chief Mayo who sold the gun to the pawn shop, Mega Gash Pawn in Hobart, court documents alleged.

Seems like an honest mistake.

I have to wonder about why a town in Indiana would want to be called “New Chicago”. Seems like it is time for a name change.
In his defense, he never thought the cases would go to trial or that the evidence would be needed. /s
Defense attorneys in the area are delighted. Now they can ask for their client’s cases to be dismissed due to malfeasance by the police department.
Yeah, I’m sure this had been going on for who knows how long he just finally got caught.
Its been a quiet a while back but my city sponsored a gun buy back and let a local black organization run it for some stupid reason.
The city gave the money to the the black organization ahead of time.....after the gun buy back when the guns were turned in to police for destruction the number of guns fell far short of what should have been bought back.
When questioned the organization played stupid and nothing ever came if it.
Can you believe it?
Either somebody pocketed money or kept some guns thst may have been desirable to have.
Things like this just confirm what a lot of us think about blacks in authority.
White people do it too you say?.....sure, but if you consider blacks are supposedly only 13-15% of the population....that means the numbers don’t add up.

I recall watching Pawn Stars — I think they don’t have a license to buy and sell firearms? I think Corey alluded to a loophole though.
Probably lots of drugs missing from the evidence locker too.
He figured he was smarter than everyone else and would never be caught - and if he were, he could fall back on his race card and scream “racist witch hunt” - and that would be the end of it.
And, he’d most likely be right. The race card has worked before, many times.
