According to Iranian and Arab sources Trump agreed to -compensate Tehran by releasing blocked funds (at least $6 billion) -lift sanctions -remove American forces from around Iran (Iranian sources more specifically mention the naval assets in the region) -lift the blockade -ceasefire in all fronts including in Lebanon (basically allowing Tehran to rearm its proxy network and help Hizballah reasserts its control in Lebanon) In exchange for -gradual reopening of Strait of Hormuz with the transit remaining under Tehran’s management and control -negotiations over other issues with no hard deadline (the 30-day negotiation window can be extended) Washington has not denied any of these claims. This is a total surrender, pretty symbolic if it is announced on Memorial Day.

The Iranians are crazy zealots. To assure that the Iranians never try to build a nuclear weapon, I only see two viable options:

1 - Invade and rebuild Iran’s government to our liking
2 - Pulverize Iran with bombing, and that would involve much loss of life.

We’ve crippled them. If a deal isn’t everything we want, but it’s a deal, take it. It’s called compromise. Besides, you can be sure the Iranians will violate any agreement, it’s just who they are. So, make nice, get through the midterms, and then if Iran is doing Iran things, then blow them up.

That’s my guess.

The Iranians might get a tanker or two but 30 days of evading the US Navy would be tough.

A modest sized tanker could be protected in the final mile by sailing an old ship (with empty cargo containers) in parallel to the north.

Most of the bad press Trump has been getting, is because of the very high gas prices and gas-prices-influenced inflation.

He's capitulating on the issue, and also knows that the mid-term elections are approaching. So, fuel prices have to come down NOW, and a rotten deal is better than losing the mid-terms.

Anytime the word negotiate is used with the Iranians, it means heads they win, tails you lose.

When one goes into negotiations, they have to weigh what they give up to what they get. In the alleged deal, we get nada we did not have before the war. We give up our immediate advantage, from a military point of view plus seized money as some form of reparations :) Worse the BRIC block is fortified.

From a domestic political view, IMO, Trump is not going to be able to frame this to our base as a positive. While none will vote for the commie left in the mid terms, our side turnout will not be as supportive as before. Trump will ramp up his misdirection into Cuba.

From a geopolitical view, kind of a push. Frankly most don’t care if Iran gets nukes as long as the oil flows. Countries in the mid east somewhat favorable to the US may realize again, when push to comes to shove, they are on their own with the exception of Israel but even that support is waning.
