Sen. Thom Tillis is facing backlash from conservatives after reportedly trying to delay a major Senate vote so Sen. John Cornyn could spend more time campaigning against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in next week’s high-stakes Republican runoff.
According to Axios, Tillis privately warned fellow Republicans he would oppose moving forward this week on a reconciliation package that includes funding for ICE and Border Patrol operations, arguing the timing could politically hurt Cornyn ahead of the May 26 runoff. Conservatives immediately blasted the move as another example of the Senate establishment putting political survival ahead of border security and President Donald Trump’s America First agenda.
Tillis reportedly told colleagues Cornyn should be “free to campaign in Texas this week instead of being in D.C. for votes,” even as Republicans are trying to advance legislation tied to immigration enforcement and Trump priorities. The North Carolina senator is said to be “fuming” after Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy lost his Republican primary following years of backlash over his anti-Trump impeachment vote.
Cornyn has faced growing criticism from the Republican grassroots over his past support for immigration compromises and bipartisan negotiations with Democrats. The Texas senator previously floated allowing illegal immigrants to remain in the United States under legal status programs and once said building a border wall “from sea to shining sea makes no sense whatsoever.”
Breitbart News also previously reported that Cornyn and Tillis participated in bipartisan immigration talks with Democrats including Sens. Dick Durbin and Alex Padilla, discussions centered around so-called “immigration reform,” DACA protections, and asylum changes.
Conservatives have increasingly rallied behind Paxton, who has campaigned as the America First alternative to Cornyn’s longtime establishment record. A recent University of Houston poll found Paxton leading Cornyn 48 percent to 45 percent among likely Republican runoff voters.
Paxton has also hammered Cornyn in campaign ads over immigration and border security, accusing him of being soft on illegal immigration and disconnected from Republican voters in Texas.

That shows that both Tillis and Cornyn need to go. Resign.
Tillis dumped himself. He is not running for re-election this year.
Sadly, it’s about 98% certain (being charitable) he will be replaced by a Democrat. Tillis really sucks but Roy Cooper will be worse.
The South Carolina GOP might consider doing a Willie Horton on Cooper. His release of crooks has led to grisly deaths.
He may be rethinking this after Cassidy’s loss in the primaries yesterday.
Tillis is not running for re-election this year, so he has no fear of consequences.
North Carolina.
And yes, they better do *something*. The whistling-past-the-graveyard types are claiming that Whatley is doing poorly in the polls simply due to Cooper’s massive advantage in “name recognition”.
Yeah, that’s the only reason. LOL.
Whatley is an atrocious candidate, handpicked by the same guy who forced Dr. Oz upon us here in PA 4 years ago.
Any poll that shows Whatley losing by 15 points (or whatever) is wrong, but only about the margin of defeat. It’s the #1 certain Rat Senate pickup in 2026.
The GOP better offset it by picking up SOMETHING (not to mention holding all their fragile seats such as Maine):
New Hampshire (possible but not actually likely);
Georgia (getting worse by the day) or;
Michigan (possible only because the Michigan Democrats are — for now — a clown show).
Those 3 are the only viable possibilities.
POTUS just endorsed Paxton!
I still have a sour gut feeling that I cannot shake that is telling me that Trump at the end of the day is going to endorse Cornyn.
Trump just has a terrible record of getting rid of GOP Establishment out of Congress. There is no way to get around this fact, it is always there. He usually helps the Establishment out in a very short-sighted “I need this thing now” and if we conservatives are saddled for another 6 years with some dirt bag well, I guess that’s tuff for us isn’t it? Trump needs that one thing and he needs it now. Right now.
Trump endorsed Linda Graham. He didn’t even wait for a primary challenger.
No reason to primary Graham. He's been loyal to Trump.
Tillis bff Cornyn bff Tillis
Both of the Bush non-Conservative ilk.
Tillis needs to go now.
Like I said.
Extremely shortsighted.
Trump has endorsed Paxton. Open some news somewhere.
It is shocking news for sure. I was not expecting this.
“Tillis dumped himself. He is not running for re-election this year.”
Thanks for the reminder. I had seen a notice about that but had forgotten it. I will be glad to see him gone.
Tillis is retiring. He's gone come January.
It's North Carolina, and the real problem we have so far is that Cooper's opponent, Michael Whatley, does not appear to be campaigning much, if at all. Whatley is the former head of the Republican National Committee, so he knows what needs to be done to run a successful campaign, but if he's out there campaigning, it is missing me.
“POTUS just endorsed Paxton!”
Great news. I had not seen this.
“Trump endorsed Linda Graham. He didn’t even wait for a primary challenger.”
Yes, that is stomach-turning. I know Trump probably wants to go with proven winners, but sometimes his choices are atrocious.
