Streeting makes call to rejoin the EU, as Starmer’s rivals gather pace

Wes Streeting has called for a “proper contest” to replace Sir Keir Starmer and confirmed he would stand if the race is triggered, as he and other senior Labour figures make their pitch to replace the Prime Minister.

In his first public appearance since resigning as health secretary, Mr Streeting set out a fledgling policy platform for a run at the Labour leadership.

He said Britain must pursue a “new special relationship” with the European Union and signalled he wanted to see the country rejoin the trade bloc in the future.

Mr Streeting is among the senior Labour figures to call for a debate over the future of the party’s soul, amid the crisis that has engulfed it after a bruising set of election results across England, Scotland and Wales.

"He said Britain must pursue a “new special relationship” with the European Union and signalled he wanted to see the country rejoin the trade bloc in the future."

That's what this is all about to the version of the UK deep state, aka, 'no matter how you vote, we'll get our way'.

ANY Labour Candidate would be just as bad as Starmer.
They are ALL COWARDS, waiting on someone else to start the process
of challenging Starmer.
There is not a backbone among them.

Streeting, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care until he resigned, was the member for Ilford (North). I guess they couldn’t get anybody from Wellford to deal with the NHS and Make Britain Healthy Again.

The guys who want Starmer replaced were enthusiastically supporting him when he got in. If there will be a change or an improvement it’s likely to just be putting a smiley new face on the same old policies.

Yep. And some are even worse. One candidate under consideration is Shabana Mahmood. She’s the Home Secretary, and a devout Muslim.

But why not her? If you’re determined to burn your building down, might as well hire a pyromaniac to run the place.

Streeting is mistaking Labour’s landslide in terms of seats in 2024 to be a mandate. Labour received only 34 percent of the popular vote, and won an enormous victory in terms of seats because of the UK’s (peculiar) first-past-the-post electoral system. Labour’s victory in 2024 was essentially a fluke.
