A brief moment at Donald Trump’s high-stakes meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping has sparked fresh attention after the U.S. leader was seen raising a glass and appearing to take a sip during a formal reception.
Footage from the event shows Trump holding a stemmed glass alongside Xi and other officials before bringing it to his lips. The moment stands out because the president has presented himself as a lifelong teetotaler—making even routine diplomatic gestures open to closer scrutiny.
The reception formed part of a tightly choreographed state visit, where symbolism and protocol carry as much weight as policy discussions. Toasts between leaders are a standard feature of such events, often designed to signal mutual respect and stability in the relationship, regardless of what is actually consumed.
Newsweek has contacted the White House for comment outside of working hours.
Images from the banquet show multiple attendees holding similar glasses typically associated with wine or Champagne. At events of this nature, however, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are frequently served in identical glassware, allowing participants to take part in the ritual without necessarily drinking alcohol. There has been no confirmation of what Trump was served.

Oh Please.
He’s over 21.
Even for Newsreek this is pathetic! It’s well known that President Trump does not drink. I’m sure his Chinese hosts knew that well in advance and that was a non-alcoholic beverage he sipped. 🤦🏻♂️
So...what exactly is the problem here..Yeah he does NOT drink, but he also had to show class by taking a sip as a good will gesture, if I were in the same situation and I dont drink also, I would have done the same thing
Even if it was, it might have been wine, WHO CARES..I mean seriously of all the nonsense to talk about THIS is what they waste their time with
He wasn’t drinking, he may or may not have even had a sip. He was being polite, period.
I just want to know how many angels can dance on the head of a pin.
This article is from the same classless people who stole bottles of wine at the white House press dinner.
In his glass probably was iced tea, apple juice, or similar. Foreign countries do their due diligence before hosting a statesman. They know he doesn’t drink.
All the problems of the world have been solved so now it’s time to speculate whether Trump touched his lips to maotai?
Just before Trump drank it Xi said, “Spill the wine, that pearl…”
Whatever it was; it came from his own chefs. He didn’t eat or drink anything from China.
They got him now!
Peech foaty seven!
My entire life I have hated the taste of all alcoholic beverages, but that does not mean I have never had the rare taste in social settings. Whatever is below the bottom of the barrel, that’s where you’ll find this piece of Newsweek trash.
Nice one.
Exactly.
It’s what non drinkers do.
Oh boy, can you even imagine the tweets if he actually did drink!
I’ve read a few articles about the menu from both this visit and the visit in his first term, and it’s my understanding that the chefs know his preferences and adjust the menu accordingly. But maybe he still will just have a burger to end the night anyway LoL.
“Crispy beef ribs, roast duck and tiramisu were on the menu Thursday at the state dinner where President Xi Jinping hosted President Trump in Beijing.”

Ohhhhh noooooooes! He might have sipped some champagne! O, the Hugh manatee!
