British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called himself a "gooner" during a speech to parliament Wednesday, seemingly unaware of the derogatory meaning in the U.S.
The slang term has two meanings in the U.K. and U.S., respectively. When a Brit calls themselves "gooners," they are emphasizing their support for the Arsenal Football Club.
However, Americans refer to "gooners" as impulsive *********** addicts who are known to be chronic ************. Starmer's innocent intention to connect with sports fans across his native country prompted comical reactions from users on X.
"Mr. speaker, I am a gooner," the British premier told his colleagues.

Gooner,”someone who engages in prolonged, compulsive sexual arousal/masturbation (internet/vulgar slang)”
So he’s a wanker.
We’ve known that for some time.
So “gooner” doesn’t mean marxist homosexual?
New slang term to me.
gooners gonna goon.

I’m not a Starmer fan, but I didn’t think Parliament was composed of Americans; so why should it be an issue if he used a word we understand differently?
Oh that’s gonna get clipped…
Americans are paying attention. And we have social media.
Never heard of gooner.
Isn’t he also a “gone-er?”
Starmer is going down, like Arsenal will against PSG.
Arsenal FC nickname is the Gunners, referred to as gooners.
Go City
Brits have no obligation to understand American slang when they’re dealing with their own issues in their own country.
(And they probably generally understand Americanisms far better than the average American understands their slang. People here on this site even seem proud and happy to insist that they don’t give a damn about anything British anyway...)
I bet you that President Trump is familiar with **nker (British slang). So he won't use that term.
So disappointed Millwall missed out on promotion to the Premier League.
