Netflix has been sued in Texas over claims it collects data belonging to children and adults in the US state without their consent, and uses "addictive" design to keep them hooked.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton accused the streaming giant of "spying" on citizens saying it "records and monetises billions" of pieces of information about how users behave on the platform, despite suggesting otherwise.
"Every interaction on the platform became a data point revealing information about the user," his office said.
Netflix has rejected the claims and says it will challenge them in court, according to a statement shared with Reuters.
"Respectfully to the great state of Texas and Attorney General Paxton, this lawsuit lacks merit and is based on inaccurate and distorted information," a Netflix spokesperson told the news agency.
"Netflix takes our members' privacy seriously and complies with privacy and data protection laws everywhere we operate."
The BBC has approached Netflix for comment.
"When you watch Netflix, Netflix watches you," says the complaint filed on Monday by Texas' top prosecutor.

Cancel Netflix
The co founder of Netflix has just announced he is backing Newsome 100% for 28. That means millions for that scumbag
I read that they also use a camera motion technique that’s meant to disorient and hypnotize children, like “shaky cam” but not as obvious. Insidious - but what else would you expect from a company that has Obamas and Clintons on board.
I can also pretty much guarantee that if you read Netflix' terms of service closely (which of course almost no one actually bothers to do), when you buy their service you are consenting to allow them to do this. Without this consent, they almost certainly aren't going to sell your their service.
I agree that it's very annoying that there's no such thing as privacy on the internet, however in all likelihood they aren't breaking any existing laws and this lawsuit will almost certainly go nowhere.
I used to hear similar spying accusations aimed at manufacturers of the popular “Elf On A Shelf” toy.
They all spy on you even your Smart TV spies on with Mic or Camera ,LOL
Sick.
We are not the consumers on the internet. We are the products being sold.

Ye. Funny thing is, many who get all sanctimonious about Google and their web browser will think nothing of curling up in front of their TV watching Netflix or other streaming services or carrying a smartphone everywhere they go.
There is a reason they want to move events off network television and into premium pay where China can spy off you.
