A California county discovered nearly 600 uncounted and sealed mail-in ballots Monday that had been cast in the November special election regarding the state’s redistricting.
Staff at the Humboldt County Office of Elections discovered the ballots inside a locked ballot drop box nearly five months after the election was certified, according to a statement from the department released Wednesday.
Immediately following the discovery, staff determined that the locked box had not been tampered with and worked with the California Secretary of State to ensure proper protocol was followed, the statement said.
Although both departments said the 596 ballots will not change the election, they are exploring options for how to get the votes counted.
The missed ballots were determined to be the result of miscommunication between election workers assigned to check the box, the statement said. The county added that it is taking steps to ensure something like this does not happen again, including implementing a “lock out, tag out” procedure to ensure each box is verified as empty and secured before results are finalized.
“While the mistake occurred after an election worker did not follow proper procedures, the responsibility for what happened ultimately sits with me,” Humboldt County Clerk-Recorder and Registrar of Voters Juan Pablo Cervantes said in the statement. “I did not have strong enough controls in place to prevent this, but we do now. We have taken corrective action and already updated our protocols.”
Cervantes said he had failed voters who placed their trust in the department, but added that he will continue to operate with transparency and enforce redundancy in protocols.
The county said it will provide updates regarding the possibility of counting the ballots.
The special election was for Proposition 50, which, after passing, allowed for the redrawing of congressional districts that would increase the number of Democratic representatives California could send to Congress following the 2026 midterms, NPR reported.
Proposition 50 was a response to a similar proposal in Texas and has sparked several other special elections and Supreme Court hearings as other states attempt to redraw districts before November.
Riverside County Sheriff and Republican gubernatorial candidate Chad Bianco, who seized ballots cast in the special election under warrants issued by a judge following what he claimed was a significant discrepancy in the vote count, told the Daily Caller that “there is nothing safe or secure about mail-in ballots.”
“It is ripe for fraud, error, and manipulation,” Bianco added. “There must be voter ID and in-person voting if we are serious about election integrity.”

With 135,418 votes counted in Humboldt County and “Yes” votes receiving a 64.0% majority, there is no way the 596 ballots could have flipped the county’s result, let alone the outcome of the entire state-wide election, which concluded with 64.4% of votes in favor of the measure and a margin of more than 3 million votes, according to election results shared by NPR.
Humboldt County demonstrated a similar electoral split in the 2024 presidential election, with former Vice President Kamala Harris winning the county with 62% of the vote, according to Politico.
“It’s easy to say, ‘This wouldn’t have changed the outcome.’ It’s also easy to continue to disenfranchise Californians from our elections,” Bianco told the Caller. ‘When everyone decides to stand up for integrity, character, and leadership by actually voting, we will save California.”
California’s Secretary of State did not respond to the Daily Caller’s request for comment.

.
I don’t know, call me stupid, but opening the ballots one at a time with witnesses from all parties and record the vote might actually work.
However, I have confidence that the progs will come up with a way that costs 20-30 million bucks.
.
Newly found ballots....
Nixon won without them, lucky for him.
The bigger question is this the only “mistake” made? Or were their others which would affect the total?
Mensa members?
Oh good grief. Do I read this right? 596 ballots for Biden in a locked box and no Trump ballots?
And they are painting this as an abominable example of disenfranchising of voters instead of voter fraud??????
Just doing this blatantly and in the open?
Golly. I just happened to open my trunk and…
Check out how Bass won LA’s last mayoral.
Past is prologue.
Rigging and rioting are the only two things the democrats know how to do.
