Trump threatens EU with ‘much higher’ tariffs if no trade deal signed by new deadline

President Donald Trump has said he will give the European Union until July 4 to ratify its trade agreement with the U.S., threatening to raise tariffs to “much higher” levels if the 27-nation bloc fails to do so.

In a post on Truth Social late Thursday, Trump issued a new trade deadline during a “great call” with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, one in which he said both leaders agreed Iran can never possess a nuclear weapon.

The conversation took place shortly after the U.S. president pledged to raise tariffs on cars and trucks imported from the EU to 25%, accusing the bloc of not complying with the terms of the deal struck at his golf course in Scotland last July.

“I’ve been waiting patiently for the EU to fulfill their side of the Historic Trade Deal we agreed in Turnberry, Scotland, the largest Trade Deal, ever! A promise was made that the EU would deliver their side of the Deal and, as per Agreement, cut their Tariffs to ZERO!” Trump said.

“I agreed to give her until our Country’s 250th Birthday or, unfortunately, their Tariffs would immediately jump to much higher levels,” he added, referring to July 4.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether Trump was indicating that the tariffs would apply to all EU goods or whether the increase would only apply to autos. His latest comments suggest that he is backing away from last week’s threat to impose higher tariffs on cars and trucks imported from the bloc, however.

The EU’s von der Leyen said via X that the bloc remains “fully committed” to the implementation of the trade deal. She added that “good progress is being made towards tariff reduction by early July.”

Will SCOTUS allow the president to govern?

The EU Witch Ursula lies. The EU member states lie. They will never fullfill the end of any agreement. Not much difference between them and Iran now - except they have Billions of dollars of our weapons sitting at bases in their countries. If they start building up their militaries like Germany said they are, then they’ll try to grab some of them. So we should just evacuate now, destroy all usable infrastructure at the bases.

Taxation, and a tariff is a tax, is the responsibility of Congress, not the President. Trump is being lazy by trying to impose them on his own. And we are being lazy by expecting that he can and not putting pressure on the Republicans in Congress to approve the tariffs that Trump wants.

Oh please it is not “laziness”. He cannot get the GOPe to pass a voter ID bill that 80% of the country is in favor of let alone tariffs.

Quotas are more effective than tariffs. Reagan did it on Japanese cars and motorcycles.

Then it is the job of the 80% to put pressure on Congress. That is the way our system works. The President is not a king; he cannot rule by decree.

Whoever follows Trump is going to have a hard time filling those shoes.

He’s a billionaire, pretty smart, a very independent thinker, had the prettiest women throw themselves before his feet, is at the end of the road in his life, was a world known name, and had enormous influence all the way back to the 80s. What is motivating him today?

This guy is legacy building. He’s creating a lasting monument to his existence.

The problem for the powers to be (the usual interests that dominate DC), is that how do you control someone like this?

You can’t.

About the only thing that’s going to stop someone like this, is a bullet.

Don’t get me wrong, this guy is spot on. His direction is one that creates long term economic growth, helps create a middle class and makes for real net increases in income, improves our foreign and internal security position...

But this guy is pissing a lot of folks off that made their billions from the status quo regards trade with China, allowing our resources to be leveraged for European security while many of them hide out and do nothing for us. You had folks that became very wealthy on the backs of illegal labor while the general public flips the bill in terms of medical care, schools, roads, and law enforcement as these folks often work cash on hand (no income taxes)... Rolling back the green gravy train even pissed off some of his close allies like Musk who has sort of returned to his side. Threating to break up monopolies, trying to control the cost gouging by big pharma. Releasing the Epstein files... basically threw many under the bus, including Royal family members: Prince Andrew who ended up going to jail.

This guy is stepping on the toes of some very powerful people, costing them BILLIONS and when these sorts of money start getting involved, they will do more than just give him negative publicity.

Frankly, I’m surprised the guy made it this long!

” And we are being lazy by expecting that he can and not putting pressure on the Republicans in Congress to approve the tariffs that Trump wants.”

Republicans are slightly less vile than Democrats, but it’s a very tight margin that continues to shrink. Somewhere around 80% of ALL Americans, not just conservatives want the SAVE act. Sen. Thune apparently is serving something other than the American people. So, to be fair, if Trump were to depend on Congress for action, well, he may as well just wish for Santa Claus to take care of it.

That rather depends on what the Constitution allows regarding the levying of such broad tariffs.
