NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Tennessee lawmakers in the House of Representatives have passed the bill that will split Memphis along new congressional lines.
Memphis will be split into three congressional districts per the new map, which passed in the Tennessee General Assembly’s special session on redistricting Thursday, May 7.
Democrats in the state house have railed against the push to redraw congressional lines outside of the decennial census, calling the move a “grave, grave rollback of rights” for Black Tennesseans and especially for Memphians.
The proposed new map, only released to the public about 24 hours before they passed the bill on the House floor, divides Shelby County further, placing about 31% of Black voters in one of three districts, instead of more concentrated in the current 9th Congressional District represented by Congressman Steve Cohen.

Virginia may soon wish that they'd left well enough alone. Instead, they pushed through a redistricting map that they knew was illegal.
I'm glad to see that some red states are pushing back against the usual GOP stance that Democrats can gerrymander but the GOP-led states shouldn't. "Muy principles" and all that marlarky.
A ““grave, grave rollback of rights” for Black Tennesseans”
It is SO racist to say that people have to be represented by their own kind. That does nothing but create Balkanization and assure that Reps get lazy because they don’t need to treat all constituents as people, just as a member of a group. That is precisely what is wrong with the Donks.
The final vote was 64-25-3 with Rep. John Gillespie and Rep. Mark White, both of Memphis, voting with Democrats. Reps. Michele Reneau, Ron Travis, and Greg Vital were all PNV. All other Democrats voted “no,” while all other Republicans voted “yes.”
Dang. My district will change again. Was in 6th, now 7th. Looks like I’ll now be in 8th or 9th.
And the natives are restless
That map shows me moving to 5th or 9th
Not 8th.
Alabama... you’re up next. Draw that 7-0 map.
“does nothing but create balkanization”
Absolutely.....and along those same lines organizations like the naacp, black congressional caucus, black entertainment television and all the rest of the “blacks only” things in our country does nothing but further drive a wedge between the races.
And don’t get me started on the hispanics trying to “south of the border” our whole damned country.
When it comes to immigration Teddy Roosevelt was absolutely right.
Love it...may or may not pay off in ‘26 but will for ‘28 and ‘30. Now lets get Louisiana, Alabama, and SC done for ‘26. And then work like hell to get Georgia off their ass, Indiana (same), Nebraska with the second district, and Missouri all redone (some for a second time).
And why does Nebraska which has one district +60 and one +20 have another that goes to the democrat in presendential elections and narrowly elects a republican in Don Bacon? Get off your ass and fix it.
bttt
Go Alabama! Roll Tide!
Republican State Senators in Alabama hastily rammed through a redistricting bill as tornado sirens blared in Senate Chambers before the livestream went dark.
As a East Tennessee resident, I voted for this!
ALL Red!
GOP stance that Democrats can gerrymandering.
Yes the democrats phony Race Card gig is up
We need a better approach in all states. A state that votes 55/45 shouldn’t have 100/0 representatives.
OK, so Marc Elias will file suit this week, or early next?
And if (WHEN!) all his suits fail, THAT’S when the violence starts?
The good thing about TN is that the national guard was called into Memphis to clean things up. If they’re still there, they could handle a “Ferguson” situation. Or will that be the dem focus? “We need to have black people injured or killed by the national guard to make our point”.
Hmm..
Me too!
