Delta scraps in-flight food and drinks in cost-cutting measure in wake of Spirit collapse

Delta is scrapping in-flight food and drink service on hundreds of flights to cut costs, as the collapse of Spirit Airlines sends ripples throughout the industry.

The new measure will begin on May 19 and remove all food and beverage service from 450 daily flights. The airline specifically plans to target trips under 349 miles, typically under one hour, on routes such as Los Angeles to San Francisco.

Passengers not in first class on those shorter flights will no longer receive food or beverage service. That means no snacks, no coffee, no tea - and, as critics pointed out, not even water.

First class passengers, however, will continue to receive full service regardless of how short the flight is.

Delta says the change is part of an effort to standardize service across its network, and that passengers on flights of 350 miles or more will now receive full beverage and snack service. Until the change, that was only the case on flights above 500 miles.

'Even on the small number of flights without beverage service, our crew will continue to be visible, available, and focused on caring for our customers, like they do on every flight,' a Delta spokesperson told the Daily Mail.

An X user clarified that the previous service typically included coffee, tea, or water, writing: 'Any flight under 350 miles in economy will get zero service. Nothing. Not even water. That covers a lot of routes people fly every single week for work.

They noted one upside: passengers on flights between 350 and 499 miles will now receive full beverage service - around 14 percent of daily flights.

Despite the downgrade, this isn’t the first time Delta Air Lines has scaled back offerings.

LOL. Uh, yeah, right. Standardize service at the crappiest level. Its a shame because Delta usually is considered a quality airline. I guess they all have to cut costs to stay in business though.

I always thought if you can’t ride in a plane for an hour to hour and half without a drink or some nuts/pretzels maybe you shouldn’t fly.

I wouldn’t care if I could bring my own cans of Dr Pepper and V8, preferably from home, without having to get wallet-raped in the terminal buying them.

Paying customers aren’t passengers anymore.

They’re cargo.

There are going to be a lot of people in the regular seats upset at not getting even a bottle of water, all requests for service ignored, then seeing First Class being fully catered to ‘like Royalty’.
They’ll find out.

I've always found it silly. As soon as the plane takes off and gets close to cruising altitude, the drink carts come out in a frenzy, like within 15 minutes. By the time they get finished, the decent is already well underway.

The need to frame it as saving the planet from unnecessary waste. They make 2 to 3 passes with a new garbage sack every time to collect cups/cans, wrappers, and napkins. That should appease the Greta Thunderthigh groupies.

Pay for first class seats, get first class service.

You get what you pay for.

One big problem with RJ puddle jumper flights is they often don’t have first class service.
