Road Trip: Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina

The 4th Fighter Wing is the host unit at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base and accomplishes its training and operational missions with F-15E Strike Eagles. Two of the wing’s four fighter squadrons are operational units, capable of deploying worldwide on short notice and immediately generating combat power.

The other two squadrons are responsible for training all F-15E aircrews for the Air Force. The 916th Air Refueling Wing, a tenant unit at Seymour, is an Air Force Reserve Command Wing under the Air Mobility Command. It is assigned 10 KC-135R Stratotankers.

Throughout the 2000s until 2021, Seymour Johnson continued to support operations in Afghanistan and Iraq during OEF, OIF, and later Operation Inherent Resolve. In 2010 another Air Force Reserve unit, the 414th Fighter Group arrived at Seymour Johnson to help train aircrews and assist in maintaining the F-15 aircraft.

In 2021, base personnel from Seymour Johnson went to Holloman AFB, New Mexico, in support of Operation Allies Welcome, to provide a home for Afghan refugees. Today, Seymour Johnson continues to train and fly the F-15E and remains a premier air defense base for the United States.

The F-15E Strike Eagle is a dual-role fighter designed to perform air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. An array of avionics and electronics systems gives the F-15E the capability to fight at low altitude, day or night, and in all weather.

The aircraft uses two crew members, a pilot and a weapon systems officer. Previous models of the F-15 are assigned air-to-air roles; the "E" model is a dual-role fighter. It has the capability to fight its way to a target over long ranges, destroy enemy ground positions and fight its way out.

The F-15's superior maneuverability and acceleration are achieved through its high engine thrust-to-weight ratio and low-wing loading. It was the first U.S. operational aircraft whose engines' thrust exceeded the plane's loaded weight, permitting it to accelerate even while in vertical climb. Low-wing loading (the ratio of aircraft weight to its wing area) is a vital factor in maneuverability and, combined with the high thrust-to-weight ratio, enables the aircraft to turn tightly without losing airspeed.

Oooooooo! Two months off!!!! I assume you’ll head east for some of that time? The mountains are pretty this time of year.

Yeah, I’m with ya on hoping I’m ready for this week. It was pretty windy today and will be more so tomorrow with rain and storms coming through. Wednesday could be really rough. I hope it doesn’t get too bad down your way.

Louie is two. He's a pretty messy cat and very fiesty!

Sometimes I call him Banana, cuz he looks like a banana when he's all stretched out.

There have been great places around the base for airplane watching at Seymour. Have not been there in years though. Everything changes these days needed or not.

Got a bit toasty there again, did it? Bummer.
Pretty toasty here, too, but not quite as bad. It hit 80 while I was out and about this afternoon. It was windy and that helped a little but not much.
It was our hottest day this week. It’ll be fairly cool again starting tomorrow.

He does look like a mess, doesn’t he!...in a good way. LOL!

At two, he’s still basically a kitten!

In a very good way.
And yep, he still has a lot of kitten in him at this point. With luck, he won’t do what some of my lil monsters have done - - never out-growing kittenhood. Three of Pixie’s Girlies have never grown up and yesterday was their 9th birthday.
