Canada won’t ‘leverage’ energy or critical minerals in U.S. trade talks, Carney says

Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada will not use energy or critical minerals as “leverage” in upcoming trade talks with U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration.

Carney said on Friday that Canada is not talking about halting any such trade with the U.S. and ruled out the notion entirely, adding Canadians honour their contracts and agreements.

But the prime minister also suggested further integration with the United States in those sectors — highly coveted by the Trump administration — remains in question.

As of late 2024 and early 2025, the natural resources sector—including oil, gas, minerals, and lumber—directly and indirectly accounted for approximately 16.0% of Canada’s nominal GDP ($459 billion).

The sector is heavily export-oriented, with natural resource exports representing roughly 53% of Canada’s total merchandise exports in 2024.

Canada won’t ‘leverage’ energy or critical minerals in U.S. trade talks, Carney says

Which means he wants to leverage energy and critical minerals in talks with Trump.

I’ve heard that 75% of Canadian exports are bound for the US. Many in an integrated way. Carney seems dumb to be playing it the way he is.

Clueless Boomer Canadians want to “get tough” and weaponize energy in trade talks with the USA.

The problems:

1) there is no all-Canadian oil pipeline route from Alberta to Ontario. The main pipeline runs thru Minnesota and Michigan

2) The electricity system has been so mismanaged that both both Quebec and the Western Interconnect (AB and BC) are now importing electricity during the Winter.

3) BC now imports more than 75 percent of its gasoline from Washington State

These clowns have NO leverage. Only huge vulnerabilities.

If Carnival tries to use a potential sale of Alberta oil into the US as leverage,
Then I predict Alberta + Sasketwan become the 51st State

That is because there is only one pipeline from Alberta to Vancouver.
After the November Atmospheric River washed multiple sections of it away in the Fraser River valley they decided to build a new pipeline double the size of the first one.

The problem is that the pipeline doesn’t even get terminate where you can load a supertanker.
So, it adds the cost of trans loading if you want to export that Alberta oil somewhere on the Pacific Ocean.
Like the US, Japan, Korea, or China.

So, they proposed another pipeline that would cross the Rocky mountains and go straight west to the BC coast. Where they could load supertankers.
The issue is that crosses First Nation(Indian) lands.
They want a piece of the action for the transport.
Plus a bunch of other stuff.
So, that pipeline keeps getting delayed.

If it ever gets built it would bring down the cost of petroleum on the west coast because it would directly complete with the oil coming from Alaska.

The other problem is that British Columbia is basically California Light.
Meaning the people who work in the bush/woods and Fraser River valley are out voted by the liberals that live in Vancouver.
So, they don’t want another pipeline or refinery.
They want the salmon to run upstream unimpeded by any dams.
They are much more socialist than people in the USA.

I deal with several Canadians in the lumber business.
They all have a chip on their shoulder when it comes to the USA. They all hate Trump.
Mostly because of the increased duties and tariffs on their subsidized lumber industry.

Also, when the truckers were striking in Ottawa they were not supportive of them.
They tend to not believe in individual freedoms and liberty like we do here.
They like their socialized health care.
They kind of have a superior attitude similar to the Europeans. Even though we provide the freedom that they enjoy.

They pretend to be Europeans.

My dealings with Canadians definitely shows them to be anti American pretending to be more than they actually are.

I smile all the time when I see how President Trump is just eliminating all their pretend blathering crap

You bet he won’t “leverage”. President Trump would drive him into the ground like an old wood tent peg.

Agree completely.

The Softwood lumber problems go back 40+ years. But BC has consistently refused to change anything about how gov’t subsidizes timber supplies.

The Canada and EU problem is that they think they are ENTITLED to tariff free exports into the US market, even though they have always had higher tariffs against US products coming into their countries.

And they also think they are ENTITLED to free defence, as well. And are resentful as hell that they are being FORCED, after decades to do some of it themselves.
