~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Port, North Carolina

NCmiitaryoceanterminal1

Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point (MOTSU) is one of the largest military terminals in the world. It serves as a transfer point between rail, trucks, and ships for the import and export of weapons, ammunition, explosives and military equipment for the United States Army and is operated by the 596th Transportation Brigade.

NCmiitaryoceanterminal6

The terminal lies between the small town of Boiling Spring Lakes, North Carolina, and the Cape Fear River a few miles upstream of Fort Johnston (North Carolina) and the small city of Southport, North Carolina.

Built in 1951 and opened in 1955, the facility is situated on an Army-owned 8,500-acre site on the banks of the Cape Fear River in Brunswick and New Hanover counties of North Carolina approximately 16 miles south of Wilmington, North Carolina. An additional 2,100 acres was set aside on Pleasure Island (location of Carolina, Kure, and Fort Fisher beaches) as a buffer zone around the facility.

NCmiitaryoceanterminal5

The terminal is not an open post and access is restricted. The wharfs are also restricted and not accessible to the public (no landing or docking). The Cape Fear River directly in front of the wharfs is restricted and non-military traffic is restricted to transit only (no anchoring).

The port can handle up to 6 ships simultaneously and features large cranes for loading and unloading vessels. A network of 62 miles of railroad tracks move munitions and supplies around the facility.

NCmiitaryoceanterminal4

Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point (MOTSU) is Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command’s East Coast strategic ammunition port, and is DOD’s primary ammunition seaport supporting the European, African and Middle Eastern areas of operation.

As a key ammunition shipping point on the Atlantic coast, MOTSU stores and ships DOD ammunition, dangerous cargo and explosives, including small arms ammunition; artillery shells, fuses and propellants; ammunition for vehicle systems; and aircraft bombs and ammunition.

Howdy, lauren. *HUGZ*

Everything in good shape in your neck o’ da woods after the storms Saturday? It looked pretty ugly on the radar and there was a tornado warning.

Saturday night was pretty bad indeed. My patio cover that is securely tied onto the patio fence got lifted off the ground and away from the fence. Lightning was intense. The two tornados that hit west of here were only about 10-15 miles away.

Tornado sirens went off in my neighborhood a couple of times. YIKES!

A few more days of wacky and unstable weather this week. Today was a record high temp here, if felt like 90 degrees at 9:00 this morning.

This is the time of year we get it all before it calms down into summer.

My cat is sitting out on the patio in his cat condo, I had best go retrieve him before anything comes up!

It looked awful the other night and was hoping you weren’t being slammed too hard. Even without tornados, those storms can have hellacious winds and it sounds like you got a good dose of that. Glad the tornados passed you by.
Gotta say I’m a bit jealous of the “light shows” though. LOL It’s been way too long since we had any here.

We’re supposed to have some wild weather here this week, too, but we’ll see how that goes. It’s so dry, it drains the energy from the rain systems that come through and we’re lucky to get a drop or two by the time they reach this end of the state.

Looks good for you for the rest of the night. It’s all to the east of Dallas now. Your kitty can enjoy his kitty condo safely. >^..^<

There you are. Hope you and your son had a good time last night. Wearing out your Ms Pac-Man? :-)

Nice temps! Feels good, doesn’t it? We have pretty much the same in store for this week and with a lot of luck, some rain with it. We’re in severe drought now and getting close to extreme. We’ll see what it says when the new map is posted Thursday.

Hey there, radu!

I sure was! I slept for almost 3 hours. LOL! I feel much more alert now than I did last night, that’s for sure.

How was your day? I pulled up the Tullahoma cam, and man was it still windy there. Were you able to mow or any other outside activity or was it better staying indoors?

To: luvie

I would HOPE you’re more alert tonight after a nap that long. LOL

It sure WAS windy this afternoon. It’s a good thing we decided to take the tent down Friday and pass on the last couple of days of early voting. It wouldn’t have stayed up in the wind today. Unlike last week, the wind didn’t die down when the sun set. It’s still whipping ahead of the front coming through tonight.

No mowing today. I had errands to run in Tullahoma.

I went out to feed the kitties, and sat with them for a bit. It was sooo quiet out there, it was almost....almost...like I was in the country. The only two things I heard were one dog down the alley and motorcycles way off on a big main street.. It was actually so nice. Oh, and I heard the silly rooster that someone in the next block has. LOL!

Sorry about the wind. It was really making all the metal seen on the cam clank together. Sorry you had to go shopping in it. Are you as eager for the cool-down as I am? One more day...tomorrow...of 90s. WoooHooo!!
