Trump has eight days to make up his mind on Iran
The Telegraph ^ | 04/23/2026 | James Crisp

Donald Trump has eight days before he will be forced to make up his mind on Iran.

He wants to end the unpopular war, but claimed on Thursday he was under “no time pressure” to do so.

In fact, the US president is bound by the 1973 War Powers Resolution, which limits his ability to wage war without congressional approval to 60 days.

That deadline passes on May 1, 60 days after his formal notification of the war to Congress on March 2.

It will compel him to choose one of four options – seek congressional authorisation to continue the war, start winding down US involvement, buy some breathing space or ignore the law.

*** But several Senate Republicans have made it clear that they will not support a war without congressional approval past the 60-day mark. ***

Ending the war is easier said than done. A second round of peace talks in Pakistan did not take place after Iran refused to confirm that it would attend.

Mr Trump has extended the two-week ceasefire indefinitely as he seeks a way out of the costly conflict.

He refuses to end his blockade of Iranian ports, which he proactively declared during the ceasefire. Tehran will not consider peace while the naval blockade continues and trust in the US is extremely low. *** “I think Trump is fed up with this war and more than that he understands, despite what he is saying, that the price is only going to intensify.”

<Mr Trump will need to claim some sort of “win,” whether that is an iron-clad commitment from Iran not to enrich uranium, or to remove its stockpile completely.

But American voters are now being forced to pay more at the pumps just months before congressional elections.

A few thoughts:

1) On March 6, Trump said, "There will be no deal with Iran except UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER!” So what is there to negotiate?

2) Iran may just attempt to run out the clock. May 1, is coming up soon.

3) If you are not victorious, change the definition of victory.

4) The United States has for a second time lifted the sanctions on Iranian oil. The vast majority of Iranian oil goes to China which purchases at below market prices. China has been building up its strategic oil reserves at a discount while we have been reducing our Strategic Petroleum Reserves which are now at a 40 year low.

I didn’t know that a president can wage war for 60 days without congressional approval. That’s pretty cool. It’s just kinda hard to get in and out that quick.

He can do a 30-day extension, but that's it.

His timeline on this action has been a mystery to me.

The IRGC leadership is smiling right now, and ordering their slaves to round up enough goats to keep them busy until then.

What’s to stop him from leaving the region for a few days and then starting it all over again?

President Obama did not receive prior congressional approval to initiate military action in Libya in 2011. The administration argued that the limited nature of the mission did not constitute a “war” requiring authorization under the War Powers Resolution, despite critics, including some in Congress, arguing the action was unconstitutional. His administration led a NATO-backed military intervention against Muammar Gaddafi that lasted roughly seven months, beginning on March 19, 2011, and ending on October 31, 2011, following Gaddafi’s death.

I get where you’re coming from but I for one don’t want our President to wallow in the same muck as our congress critters.

It took the U.S. 3 and 1/2 years and millions of troops on the ground to get an unconditional surrender from Germany in WWII. We can’t get this type of surrender from Iran without a ground incursion.

Considering the limited time window, I cannot understand why the admin would agree to a 2-week ceasefire. Seems counter-intuitive.

We got an unconditional surrender from Japan without a ground incursion.

Iran has already broken the ceasefire agreement. And what has Trump done about that?
