Volodymyr Zelensky is poised to make a surprise appearance at a European Union summit to demand progress on Ukraine’s membership application.
The Ukrainian president is seeking to capitalise on the electoral defeat of Hungary’s Viktor Orbán, the bloc’s leading Kremlin ally.
Mr Zelensky will arrive in Cyprus seeking concessions from his EU counterparts after capitulating to demands from Brussels to restore the flow of Russian oil to central Europe in order to unblock a €90bn (£78bn) loan.
He had been scheduled to join an informal leaders’ dinner in Nicosia via video link, but officials now believe he is planning to attend in person on Thursday.
The last-minute decision to make the trip was first reported by the Financial Times.
Mr Zelensky travels outside Ukraine when he sees an opportunity to secure backing for his country’s war efforts.
He is also trying to push Ukraine back up the global agenda, with most countries now more engaged with Donald Trump’s war on Iran and rising energy prices.
European ambassadors finalised a loan to Kyiv on Wednesday after Mr Orbán agreed to drop his long-standing veto over the scheme.

I get that I do but it’s about time he tell the EU to put their boots where their money and their mouths were. It’s only article 5 if we agree and I hear EU isn’t very busy..
The EU would be drained of money the instant the agreement was signed.

Whatever Little z does, he needs to increase the minimum age to fight from 26 to 50.
And he needs to send as many people out of the country, as possible.

The EU is on the verge of default, admitting the financial basket case Ukraine would seal default.....not going to happen. The EU has even openly discussed jettisoning the member nations that are the greatest debtors, and have approached the IMF for bailouts.

With the Iran war dominating the news, NATO could sneak in Ukraine without much resistance. Russia is too weakened to do anything about it. They have lost Iran, their main supplier of drones, and critical parts for drones that Russia manufactures. Russia also assembles drones from knockdown kits (like Ikea) that Iran was sending.
In recent weeks Ukraine has sent more drones into Russia, than the other way around. Russia oil exports have been cut way back by drone attacks. Just when the oil price is high and sanctions lifted.
I don’t think he is ever going to have elections. He appointed himself dictator.
