Thieves have destroyed nearly 75 fire hydrants on the west side of Detroit in the last 48 hours, stealing parts and putting lives at risk.
Crews with the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department are racing to repair the broken hydrants along Southfield Road and across the west side after thieves tore through dozens in about two days.
"We think the number is about 75 so far," DWSD Deputy Director Sam Smalley said.
The thieves are targeting metal nozzles and stems on top of the hydrants, which are worth about $600.
Executive Fire Commissioner Chuck Simms said the vandalism is a serious and unacceptable situation that puts lives at risk.
"No matter how fast we get to a fire, if we don't have an operable fire hydrant, it takes seconds, sometimes even minutes away from maybe us saving lives," Simms said.

Detroit was already lost to civilization. Let them die.
No pictures of the thieves ? LOL
Firefighters show off amazing new way to extinguish flames — by blasting them with sound, not water
Could have at least done some good and cut off parking meters.
What recycler won’t recognize the items, and why do recyclers not wonder where 100s of the same items from cemeteries or from old city lamp posts come from, or brand new and freshly soldered copper pipes, etc. etc. come from?
Still thinking about the car washing scene?
Could they extinguish thieves?
Scrap metal dealers are known for dealing in stolen goods — hydrants, manhole covers, copper wire — but they’re strangely untouchable.
Thieves or Democrats?
Inquiring minds want to know.
We have a failure to communicate...
I remember El Rush-Bo talking about a program that made extra tough grocery carts FOR THE HOMELESS. They were “designed” to be used outside.
So......... Maybe some leftist billionaire will fund “special” fire hydrants that, while not connected to the city water system, would be strategically placed in the areas where the real fire hydrants are vandalized the most.
Heck, just like needle exchange programs, thugs could bring in real fire hydrants, and exchange them for the new ones.
Whitler to the rescue, quick as Flint.

Don’t ask, Boo-boo.
For stealing that metal the thieves should be met with cylindrical, rapidly moving metal objects from firearms.
So the person(s) using the sonic fire suppressors will need to wear self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) so they do not pass out and die?
If it’s not bolted down, it belongs to the illegal alien chimpanzees.
This is a documentary about the Detroit Fire Department and it’s sad that a once great American city has fallen this far.

There is a big chunk of brass in the top of some (all?) hydrants.
